I bought an 08 Rav4 in November through a used car dealer. Toyota gives a 60 month 100,000km powertrain warranty. I'm at 101,000 and it's got a bad (knocking CV joint). My local dealer says they can't do anything. Does anyone have any advice on potentially getting it covered? I know they don't owe me anything, but it would be nice if they'd do something for me. The really crappy part is that aftermarket axles don't seem to exist and the oem one is $614 locally or $395 if I have it shipped to buffalo and make the 4 hour round trip to pick it up.

Anyone have any advice or am I SOL?

Toyota owes you nothing, not only are you out of warranty, you aren't even the original owner. Another thing is CV joints usually aren't included in powertrain warranties, anyway.

All that said, it never hurts to ask. Find a sympathetic local Toyota dealer to do the claim for you and give it a shot. If they say no, you're out nothing, but even if they give you just a reduced price it'll be worth it. Be prepared to pay the dealer for install if Toyota gives you a partial credit, which may or may not save you any money over the buy in Buffalo route.

Give Toyota a call and be really nice over the phone, they might give you a hand with the parts and or labor.

I don't even think the used car dealer owes you anything.

At 101k, if anything breaks, you fix it or pay to have it fixed. I guess I'm too quick to accept this philosophy.

I'd be embarrassed to ask.

Whats the worst that can happen if you ask? They'll point and laugh loudly. I'd still ask.

also call axle shops in your area and see if they have a rebuild kit available for the axles.

I never thought to check eBay for a used one. Thanks! Fwiw, I called Toyota Canada and they said since I was only 1000km out of warranty, they would likely cover a percentage of the repair, but I had to go get it inspected by a Toyota dealer first. I just bought a used one though for $125 and I'll repack it and put it in.
