Any Triumph nerds here know the inside distance between the tires on a TR-3?  Or do you know if one will fit on a U-haul car trailer?

If Ted Theodore is on here somewhere, he would probably know. He owned one for quite a while.

Moss has the track listed here. Does that get you close enough?

According to that the track is 45”.  The trailer is 42”.  Things are looking up.

I did too, but always had a solid floor trailer to haul it on.  I never measured it, but it was narrow.

Isn't track outside of tire to outside of tire?  That would leave 1.5" of tire sitting on the rail.  One good bump and the car drops one side down the middle.  Bring along a couple of 2X12s and run them crossways under the tires just in case.  I have to do that whenever I put a small car like a Midget on my lift, and had to do so towing a Midget once with an open trailer.

I think track is center of tire to center of tire.  Still, that's pretty close.  Crossways 2x12's sounds like a good idea.

FWIW, the track on an RX-3 is 50" and it baaaarely fit on a U-haul.  A 45" would possibly be doable but you'd have to aim it right when shoving it on the trailer.

Track is center-center.

In reply to Titan4 :

That is correct.   Center to center.   Add the with if a tire to get an outside measurement.

+/- wheel offset.

Wheel offset has nothing to do with it, though.  The center of the tire is the center of the tire no matter where the hub surface is.

So wheel track is center to center?  That’s going to take some thinking.  I know I had no trouble bringing home  2 spitfires, one on a dolly and one on a Uhaul trailer.  I’ll go measure those.

I had a custom built trailer for my MGA race car. At one point I used it to take an ailing TR-3 to the shop - and it almost fell through the middle between the runners.  They are damn narrow at 45" vs. close to 49" for the MG.  2"x12" are a good idea.

Time to take this thread on a tangent.  I have a TR3 non overdrive transmission in the basement.  Free to anybody that wants it.  I paid $25 for it at an auction just because I didn't want to see it go in the trash bin.  I can grab the numbers on it if its relevant to anybody.  Located in Carver Ma.  Willing to ship at your expense.

We are talking two different things.   Track doesn't change but overall width can.

Huh?

Track width is the center-center of the tires.  If you change the wheel offset, you change the track.

Old age is a terrible thing on the mind.

As I was driving back from Lowes yesterday,  I remembered I still have a Bentley Factory manual for the TR-3 in my work bench.

Would you mind looking up the inside distance between the tires?
