So I've begun my turbo install on my sportx. As some of you know, the car has a manual transmission swap (not originally offered with a manual). The intercooler is of sufficient size that the power steering "cooler" loop needs to be relocated. Can I just use the tranny cooler in the radiator for a power steering cooler and have more simplicity and better steering cooling? It would be easy because the soft line going to the cooler is the same size, plug and play. What sayeth the hive mind?
All depends on flow rate through the cooler. Not all the trans oil needs to go through the cooler. All the p/s fluid has to return through, so that could add pressure on the racks outlet side.
Don't know.
I'd bet it would work just fine. However, I have one question. What is the average PS oil temperature as it runs now? The the internal cooler in the radiator will keep the fluid in it close to engine running temp, which is significantly lower than the temp of a hard working AT. You might be inadvertently raising the average running temp of the steering system.
The pressure and flow I doubt will be an issue, but it would be nice to have some accurate data about the temperature before hand.
Ditto the above. I think you'd be heating the power steering fluid most of the time.

Our PS fluid would run 240 degrees with the stock U cooler. We swapped it for a plate style trans cooler about 6" x 9" and it dropped the temp to 160.
The car is an 89 SHO that we endurance race in WRL.

I asked the same question of AGR (who made the power steering pump in my car). They said PS fluid runs cooler than radiator temps, so you'll be heating up your PS fluid, not cooling it. Run a dedicated cooler.
You post any updates on the build? Last i saw you talked about the crown v12, guess your turboing the 2j? Sounds awesome. I looked in your recent posts and didnt see one, if not, update it soon! That is an awesome build
I dunno if I'd use the in-rad cooler for it, but I've been running a stacked plate oil to air trans cooler (about 5x11") as a PS cooler for years. Flows plenty and keeps the system at pretty reasonable temps, even when working it hard in the middle of summer.

Been plugging away on it and some other projects. Did ss goodridge lines last weekend and a nice alpine stereo install (nothing crazy, just iPod integration, an amp and sub). The swift racing technologies turbo setup with a haltec is what I'm working on now. It has a precision th6876a turbo. I didn't want to do an update till there were pics for you guys;) it's coming soon. I'll have to go and see what the last update was, there's been a lot of stuff done at this point.
