Driving the Land Cruiser around today, I noticed something I didn't notice before; when I stab the gas, the engine revs, but the car pretty much maintains it's current rate of acceleration. Now, I know it's a huge underpowered thing and acceleration isn't a strong suite, but this feels abnormal.

So, great GRM repository, what do we think? Torque converter? Kickdown cable? Transmission dying? The TLC community suggests a fluid change, but if that doesn't work you're borked. I would not like to be borked.

drop the pan, remove junk, look for metal bits. Replace with new gasket and Lucas transmission additive + replace the fluid that came out with the pan, but leave some old fluid in there....avoid getting borked.

If the takeoff is lacking, converter.

If driving, typically band/clutches. But a plugged up filter can cause it too.

I agree though, drop the pan and have a look. But be prepared to just put it back on, refill it with the old fluid and push it over a cliff or into a river.

My Toyota Crown started slipping on me a couple of days ago. Turns out it was just running low on fluid. After adding about 1.5L of ATF, she's now shifting smooth as ever.

But I take it you've already checked the trans fluid level .

buy a 2nd transmission to rebuild, you might even get one that is slipping for a deal.

After you figure out how to rebuild your slushbox you can work on perfecting time travel. I opened one and it was like Pandora's box. There was no way to get all the evil bits back inside. Every so often Mom will complain because she got a little spring or something caught in her vaccum. (If you do ignore my advice and try anyway don't do it in you parent's living room)

I consider myself a reasonably intelligent man, but automatic transmissions confuse the hell out of me. There's no way that sucker is getting cracked open more than dropping the pan.

Update: adjusting the kickdown cable seems to have greatly improved my issue. Next week: fluid and filter change!

Yeah, I have wasted a lot of money and time trying to rebuild an A4LD...still doesn't work.

I have NEVER seen a Toilet, errr Toyota, automatic trans work again properly after being rebuilt. This even applies to dealerships that you take it to to have it diagnosed to be fixed after rebuilding it. Dealer said, "Put a new trans in it." So that speaks volumes to me....

Years ago, I worked at a Buick dealer. A lot of cars were traded in because of transmission "failure". I fixed a lot of them with a simple fluid and filter change. Then i have fixed some with a dose of "Mystery Oil". The mechanical parts of the transmission aren't too bad to work on but the valve body is a whole different thing.

Just in case that didn't fix it - the answer is H55F or NV4500

Well if it keeps getting cranky the answer is a $200 used 440F, then in the spring a SBC swap!
