I'd push him toward mid-size over full-size. Then try to convince him to drive the (2.7T) Colorado or Canyon first. Despite being 'only' a 4-cylinder, the engines in everything else on the list will feel like a downgrade by comparison.

take him to carmax and pickout a lineup of pickups he thinks he wants + a wildcard and have him test drive them back to back to back.

I've definitely used a similar method in narrowing down the choices. 

Anymore than three gets a little out of hand, though.

I have a 1st gen Titan. The fuel mileage is awful, but it's surprisingly nimble for what it is. I added the back-up camera and radio myself for cheap. My in-laws have a 2nd gen Titan, and they enjoy it. I've been in it plenty of times, and it's a solid truck.

My brother has a last gen Taco and loves it.  It's comfortable for a truck.
