Would like to tow two cars on one trailer, both cars are small (miata and bmw 2002) and each is less that 2,000
lbs. Plan to tow with a 2007 Toyota Tundra (rated at 7.500
lbs) So the trailer could be up to 3,000 lbs. Any ideas?
would this need to be a 5th wheel or could you do this with a cat 3 type tow point on the toyota?
TIA
grant
Your tongue weight will be an important factor if you opt for a bumper type hitch. A 5th wheel will probably be better suited to this. I used to have a scale built in to my 5er that would allow me to see the weight at the hitch. pretty handy
Here's my 2-Opel trailer, 24' deck and 1340#.
Well, nevermind, guess my picture host doesn't work anymore. Sorry if the big red "X" bothered anyone.
A friend of mine designed and (had) built an alluminum 2 car hauler. Its sized for two spec miatas but I think a 2002 would fit without a problem. Its built to be a bumper pull with an all up weight (including the two miatas) of <7000 lbs so a new 1/2 ton could pull it. If you're interested, send me private contact and I'll put you in touch with him (its for sale).

Thanks, sent PM to stumpmj and if oldopelguy has a viewable picture that would be nice too...
Class III hitch, no. Class III/IV or Class IV, yes.
And actually you could probably successfully do it with a Class III hitch, but it would be at or just over the limit of the hitch. Especially if it's one of the lighter Class III hitches that attaches to the existing bumper and not to the frame.
A good Class III/IV or up receiver hitch will do just fine.

I got your message thanks...
I have a 32' open hauler, weighs around 2500 pounds and works great. I use it to haul salvage cars now, but it spent its first 3 years hauling SpecRX7s and Spec Miatas.
To source one, eBay is your friend. I paid $4k for mine in 2003, and that was a screaming deal at the time as the only ones I could find new or used were at least $10k. Now at any given time there are half a dozen or more 26-36' tag open haulers, dual and tri-axle, and some even have fancy LED lights all 'round.
Tundra will pull it just fine, although if you put anything heavier on it you might find it doesn't come off the line very quickly. Only thing to watch out for is while towing, remember you'll have the maneuverability of an 18 wheeler... those right turns have gotta be wiiiiiiide.
Depending on the length you go with, and your state laws, if you find yourself in need of expanding your length Take 3 trailers sells ready to go "flippers" that will give you another 3' of working space, and are within the Texas DOT regulations (allowing you to have 7' of overhang behind a trailer if its a motor vehicle).
