Viper guys. Thoughts on this car?

I'm cross shopping a lot of cars, including vipers, and came across this one. Any thoughts? I want some thing I can drive sparingly for a couple of years and not lose my ass on it if I decide to sell. http://m.ebay.com/itm/321629936686?cmd=VIDESC

That's some cash for a gen II with no miles. They do better being driven. That car with those miles is a huge maintenance risk.

For what they are asking, which is 9K to high in my eyes, and a few skipped lattes you can get a Gen IV coupe or vert which will destroy this in terms of performance and will be easier to maintain and will hold its value just as well.

I passed on a 08 coupe with perfect records and 13K miles a few months back for 55K asking. My perosnal opinion is the Gen 3 coupes are the ones to go after. The motor ECU has been cracked so everybody wants them to modify and the 06 has the better bearings, put in a gen IV sump and you can run that care 200K miles or sell it in a few years and get back exactly what you paid.

Nothing useful to say other than lovely car. No real experience with Vipers, but a friend snagged us the sister car to that one as our wedding car. The two of us left the wedding in it and arrived at the reception. As the guests left the wedding after us, but needed to be at the reception before us we took the long way round. My wife also had a go, driving a Viper in heels and a wedding dress was interesting for her. It was a new 99 GTS, Same interior, exterior was black with silver stripes.

Ahhh...memories. I had a '99 GTS. Black, no stripes. Blacked out windows. It was the most gorgeous car I've ever had. Honestly, I didn't enjoy driving it as much. My biggest complaint about it was that it was a whitle knuckle ride on anything other than flat super smooth pavement. I like a car that requires you to pay attention and drive, but the Viper was nuts. It tramlined like crazy, a crowned road was downright scary at times. There was nothing wrong with my car, that's just how it was, I heard other owners with the same complaints. The driving position was very awkward, the relationship of the pedals and steering wheel was all goofy. The car was fast as a raped ape (though factory exhaust note was wimpy), handled amazingly well and was just a stunning car. I could have lived with the strange driving position, but the tramlining really ruined the driving experience for me. From an investment standpoint, I don't think you'll lose take a bath, but I'd suggest taking one for a nice drive to make sure you like it. Man...I really hate to talk bad about the Viper, I really liked the car in so many ways.

I haven't even looked at the gen 3 or 4 cars yet but definitely want a coupe. I will take a look at some of those now and try and find a decent buyers guide. Thanks for the info so far guys!

Oh, and check them carefully to make sure they have a clean title. There are an unusual number of salvage title Vipers out there. The reason is due to the price of the front end body panels. Go ahead and Google the price of an OEM hood from Dodge...just make sure you're sitting down first. A light hit that damages just the hood, bumper cover, headlights may well total it. Hence a lot of salvage titled cars.

That supercharged gen III is gorgeous. I just want something I can have some fun with and not lose a ton of money on if/when I decide to sell. I really like the c6 ZR1, but I feel like it's still depreciating.

I am tempted to get the blower car. I sold my 06 coupe first edition with like 30K miles with a replacement motor and needing tires for 45K about 9 months ago.

I really miss that car.

They keep talking about a blown factory viper happening. THe hellcat motor does not fit int he viper with the lower hood. Plus I bet it weights a ton.

I love the new 2.0 TA but man is it a ton of money new and in that price point there is some incredible slightly used stuff that has a better street presence and survivability for the normal guy.

Last spring I purchased a 97 GTS for 34k one owner 26k miles. In the summer I decided it really wansn't the car for me and sold it within a week of listing it for 34k with 30k miles. Others priced higher don't seem to sell quickly. When I looked on Autotrader last week there was still cars listed that were for sale when I was looking to buy mine.

Currently driving a CTS-V sedan.

Definitely find a viper to drive before you buy one. I'm young and I found it very annoying to get in and out a lot. Other than that it just gets annoying talking to someone about your car every time you stop to do anything. GRM covered those concerns in the "Every Day Supercar" article about daily driving a viper, I was that douche bag that didn't want to talk to everyone about my car, but I offered to sell it to everyone that asked about it.

I'm pretty sure I'd be arrested within the first few hours of Viper ownership. The only way that wouldn't happen was if I was dead first, which is almost equally as likely. There's no way I could own a car like that and enjoy driving it at safe/sane speeds...not to say I wouldn't want to own one.

I strongly considered getting into a z06 after the viper.

I don't think I'd have the patience to regularly drive a viper. After driving a black Z06 regularly for a couple years I'm glad I went with black except for it looking dirty. Bit more under the radar. Occasional compliment, but no one pestering me about the car.

I'm also the type that doesn't like to socialize at every stop, but I hate to pass up on a cool car because of it. Surprisingly my gold 78 trans am seems to get the most attention out of the current fleet.

So, am I also crazy to suggest a TT 911 as an alternative? Sorry side track the subject, but I'd been searching out 02-05 996 turbos... right about that same ballpark. Surprisingly, one of the more reliable models out of the 996 lot due to having a unique block. Good alternative to the Viper in that it is more every-day friendly, and that seems odd saying it about a porsche. Good performance, awd, nice looks. My uncle's was quite fun, though they are a bit loud, to me a good thing. I don't necessarily feel a person set on a viper would prefer the Porsche, but they are in the same price/performance category. I'd love a viper one day, but it would have to be a second car, and the day that I can afford two cars in that price range hasn't come yet. My last track event at BIR I must have seen 5 Vettes, and I think 3 911s, one of which was a GT3, absolute glorious sounding cars. There was also a Viper ACR with the nurburing on its wing, another amazing looking/sounding car.

I'm definitely looking at the 996tt as well. My car interests are extremely diverse, so I've been cross shopping everything from cl65 amg Mercedes, to Pantera, to Ferrari 348/355/360s, and on and on. The 996tt is definitely a front runner, but I've owned several Porches, so was thinking the viper would be something very different.

I recently looked at Pantera prices for the first time in a few years and was shocked. Last I checked ~$45k looked like it would buy a nice example, now it looks closer to $65k.
