Not really on topic but we made a viscous limited slip differential for the UAH Moonbuggy. It kinda worked.
we had a vlsd in our e30 for a little bit and though it worked and generally was very smooth, on uneven grip surfaces it felt a little like it didnt know what to do, at least compared to a tight clutch type. i didnt get much seat time to really get to know it like i know the clutch type though. it was much better than open.
For most people and most driving, I think they are probably the best of all the worlds.
They are completly open for normal driving, letting the vehicle feel completely normal and doscile.
When you start spinning a tire, the viscous balance kicks in smoothly and gently, powering the other side (a bit), and moving you along. Very nice.
Not #1 for hard core or racing applications. But very nice for normal or even spirited street driving.
I've got one in my Miata, and a friend had one in his Nissan.
