Oh, and there's a VIN break halfway through 98 where they went from external to internal slave and single to dual mass. I may have one or both of those reversed. Text me if you want a whole manual parts or rebuild car, needs work on trans but everything you need is there plus a lot of new parts

I am sure that's true too. But, many turned smoothly...I would suspect once valves and pistons clash...it would be felt with hand turning?

Do you know why the trans was failing?
Yes. It sounds like just a bad roll of the dice on the reman. I am betting about half of that cost was labor...if not more.
My trans worked perfectly until it broke. I am blaming myself for the breakage. I think I asked too much o a 300K+ mile transaxle. The funny thing is that we forget these were expensive cars bad in the day. Now they really have very little value, accept for strange people like me.
This all happened about 5 years ago, so my memory is fuzzy. I remember the first fault code had something to do with the controller near the ABS unit. So we replaced that (twice, I think). It went down hill from there.
When she bought the car, it had lowering springs and wheels/tires that rubbed the fenders. Signs the car may have been abused. This should have been a warning sign to walk away, but my ex- is one of those types where if we drive from NJ down to Baltimore to look at a car, she's going to buy it no matter what. She forced me into the same mistake when I bought an E30. I really didn't like the car, but she more or less guilted me into buying it anyway. Second biggest car purchase regret I've made (she was responsible for the biggest as well).

None of that Saab/GM stuff has anything to do with these Volvos unfortunately.
Some front drive Volvos did come with 4T60s, maybe 4T65s. GM transmission with a Volvo bolt pattern on it.
With supporting mods, drag racers have run them up over 1000hp.
I've never heard of the AW50 as being a super tough trans. This is most of the reason my S60R search has been limited to '06-07 models, as they had a 6 speed auto that was tough enough to not need torque limited to ~268ft-lb in first and second gear like the 5-speed needed.

That was the death of my trans. I basically remove the torque limiter in 1 and 2nd via boost controller.
I didn't think I had any presigns of issues, but looking back I did. I smelled clutch once...but wrote it off as "you aint gonna smell clutch on an auto trans", but something organic was definitely burning. Then there was a clunk a few times going into reverse, but I thought is was my solid motor mount. Well...

My current car as the AW51 (55? I forget) and the B4204T3 (read: low torque) and it's always whined in 1st gear. The trans shop we work with says "they all do that, don't worry until it sounds like it is grinding."
It blows my mind that Volvo used this trans in heavier cars with high pressure 5cyl and even twin turbo 6cyl in the S80.
I keep the boost turned down when I am towing to keep the trans happy and even when turned up I don't go into full boost until I know the trans is in 3rd gear at least.

My 850 is my daily driver, so I would mostly take it easy. I know I am to blame though. I have it set up to get 10psi of boost in any gear at 1/4 throttle (max boost 15psi and I have done 20psi)...so that is a lot of torque going through my trans when the car is under a high load. (head down in shame...but it felt so good). In stock config, it would barely push 5psi in 1st and 2nd at full throttle...then in 3 and 4th it would allow a full 8psi
Did you check out the accumulator mod yet? Quick explanation is you put a section of bolt in the springs for them that only allows them to open 1/8-3/16 or so. I was told n auto trans "slips" from one gear to the next and this speeds up the shift dramatically, increasing performance and longevity. I did NA cams, full turbo back 3" exhaust, tune and 20+ psi on the 15g for several years on this mod and i drove it like a complete ASS. I was at the Mexican used tire store at least every 3 months or sooner for fronts, drag raced about once every month or 2 on slicks, and had enough power to break 2 axleshafts at the splines.
PS: i saw your Tube channel, I'm ready for us to put a Euro spec RWD m90 5 speed on my T5 engine and put it in a 86 Celica Supra with coilovers and super stickies if you want to help.

I did check out the mod.. I will check out more info on it. I am surprised you ran 20psi on the autotrans. Do you think that the accumulator mod allowed this?
I am suspecting this is your car they are talking about there? http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=108965
Yes! That's me, Sam and Kenny. My car absolutely smoked the trans at the track one night, we found a good used 150k mile unit from a fellow 850 guy, did the mod and i thoroughly abused it for 3 more years before I sold it to a Tbricker in Atl. Last time I talked to him he was 2 years into using it, untouched, in a 19t powered 350+ HP daily. Heebspeed is the guys here in Mont and they are REALLY good friends to have if you have a "VO-VO"

I am not sure what say...but you are blowing my mind. I may just grab a auto trans and mod it...and ride it out until I can find a manual, much like you did.
What's your advice on an auto from the salvage yard? Or, do you think your guys can hook me up with one?
I would find one at Pullapart, drain, mod, fill and see what happens if youre on a budget (they are really cheap, but lots of DIY work) or try a used trans dealer so you can at least get a short warranty. Most everyone down here is RWD but I'll ask around. Or try to find Mark (Tequilagundamnochaser) on Turbobricks, he lives in Atl and has lots of FWD stuff. May even sell you my old trans!
I think there's a reason it's hard to find the m56, they're all broken? I don't know, but I have run the 1/4 about 10 to 12 times in a night on an auto
