I don't think these are all that unlikely to be cross shopped. So, I'm going to add two more to the mix of most unlikely to be cross-shopped: International Travelall, and Masarati Quattroporte.
I vote for the Quattroporte.

Here's first class shortened car
You see, to me shortening a malaise era domestic makes sense. It's poking fun and making a caricature of what it was, plus making something that could really be usable and fun with some work. The Mazda just seems a short, strange useless oddity.
Except these were expensive customs done back in the day when these were new

I bring you bill Harrah's jerraris

The TDI would see a less re-donk-ulous sized Nokian tire fitted onto it on a second set of wheels if I get it.
I would need to see how the lift was done to the Golf. Both have way too much potential to be a jury rigged nightmare, but at least with the Golf the odds are less that it could crack in half.
Presumably the VW is all or mostly reversible? Looks like rub-city in the front if you actually go over anything rough though.
The Protoge is a special kind of death trap. While I can't tell whether the seats would stay with the front half or back half when the two halves separate, the seat belt looks like it would stay with the back half. So either could result in a pretty gruesome failure mode. It would almost get a pass from me if the seats AND seatbelts stayed with the front half...And verified that the brake circuits split f/r rather than diagonally.
In reply to MadScientistMatt :
I've put together a mkiv TDI with nearly identical engine modifications in the past, he used the right bits on it. Wheel/tire would be where the changes would be made.
Ignoring my snark about the Protege, the difference in the descriptions of the sellers also makes a compelling case for the TDI.

Those are the back seats, so not sure why they would stay with the front. Also, how tall do you need to be to drive that? There is only one seating position and it appears to be pretty damn far back.

I see it now. Thanks. It didn't even cross my mind that it might just be the rear seat rather than something on sliders. I understand why they did it that way, but not something I have any desire to experience.
I'd run far, far away from both, but if I got caught running and had a gun to my head to choose, I'd go with the TDI. That Protege thing looks straight up claustrophobic to drive! At least the TDI can be "corrected" if you want.
Diesel
Mesh wheels
My two favorite things. But you could put mesh wheels on the VW a lot easier than making the Protege diesel so that's my vote.
I don't get all the claustrophobic comments, but growing up my mom did fine with an '86 MR2 as her only car, so I may be biased.
Does the fab person for the chopped car have photo documentaton of weld quality? I would hate to push its limits only to have it start cracking in places you can't access.
You all forget that I have a complete straight rust free BG protege parts car. If the shortened one starts to separate or crack, it can very easily become a limo and have double the suspect welds holding it together.
