And 3.6 liters making 300 hp? Not very good in the modern day performance world.
Are you sure you don't mean bog standard par for the course? Because that's what that is. If you compare that to GM or Chrysler's ~300hp 3.6L engines that have NO lineage back to the early 90s and no inherent port-length weirdness, the question i would ask is why are those NOT better than the vr6?
My buddies and I were briefly considering snagging a VR6 powered golf for a rallyx car. It fell through.
We briefly researched it and people seem to easily make 400-500whp with boost on an unopened motor, or a motor with a thicker headgasket.
Based upon sound & pricing I'd really love to find out that it would be easy to find a 275ish hp version, but probably a smaller engine because they kept upping the stroke to get the displacement & want more of a revver than a diesel like engine.
I could sell my brand new '04 S2000 engine for much more than the cost of the VR6 plus ancillaries which would give me money to spend on other things needed for the car.
Looks like the Toureg is the best source for the higher hp versions, but now how do you run them? Has anyone found a way to use the stock ecu in an engine swap?

I loved the sound of my VR6, but I hated the rest of the damn car.
