Looking at a MkII GTI 16 Valve. Runs but badly. Diagnosed with bad fuel distributor, bad fuel pressure regulator and bad knock sensor. Not at all familiar with VW GTI since I sold my '84 30 years ago. Parts price quotes were $1600.
Interior nice, exterior not bad, but rubber pieces getting roached. Sunroof manual, but didn't want to open, NBD.
Stock appearing car. Asking $3500
Are there options to replacing the pricy fuel parts? Easy engine swaps? Would love to see this sitting low with nice wheels and tires and a nice exhaust. Not nice enough to restore, I don't think they are worth all that much restored. Would make a cool hot hatch toy.

They are getting very hard to find and thus pricing has been creeping up for good ones.
'87-'89 had the 1.8
'91-'92 the 2.0 with motronic
Does it have vent windows and small bumpers?
Fuel distributor can be sent out for a rebuild, $350 or so. That is 90% of the fuel problem, the rest is cake. Small cheap pickup pump in tank and more expensive one under the car. There is a plastic box the fuel pump and dampner attach to that is made of plastic and used to be $$, I broke a couple of those by hitting stuff on the road.
Also the transmission can grenade itself.
Depending on the condition I would say $3.5k is ok. A good one would be 7-8k.
I have been quietly looking for one on and off but there are non in south Florida. So if you are into them definitely consider it.

All 80's-90's hot hatches are slowly becoming hens teeth in good condition. I still search for another CRX but finding one unmolested and not a rust bucket is non-existent in my area.
'88 is small bumper no vent window. Not as desirable as the later ones. Maybe offer $2500.
Depends on what you want to do with it. I really enjoyed my '87.
The exterior does look better in the pictures.

Really? I've got a '91 in really nice shape, 53K on it, been sitting for several years now. The clear coat starting to flake off . Interior is almost showroom. I wonder what it would bring? I need to get it running right after I'm done the current project.

If its Montana green, big money. That is a car that would do VERY well on Bring a Trailer.

CIS injection cars do not like air leaks on the intake tract. Air intake boot, throttle body boot and injector seals probably need attention.
(Just a guess.)
Everyone jumps at the fuel distributor, ect, ect, ect because people no longer know how to work on these.
So you are talking a $3500 car that needs (supposedly) $1600 of parts. So it is a $5100 car. I don't think so.
If you don't want to play with the CIS, the car still does not need an engine swap. I am sure there is some very well documented Mega-Squirt write ups on these. Nice MkII 16 valve that runs good would be sweet.

No, not in the 15 or so years I've owned it, but I can't say whether the previous owner did or not. There are signs of corrosion on things like the lines to the fuel injectors,so it may have been driven in some inclement weather.

I feel like I see mk2 GTI project cars like this sit on clist for weeks with asking prices under $1500 on the west coast. Now part of that is emissions testing is stringent so poor running cars are worth a lot less than good runners. Exception for 2.0l, those get scooped up.
