Does anybody know if the various choke mechanisms available on these carbs are interchangeable?

The 32/36 on the Celica is missing a choke mechanism and I'm trying to figure out if it'll be cheaper to rejet it and stick the/a choke mechanism back on or just put another carb on and sell this one on ebay (or on here).

Missing the butterfly and everything or just a cable?

It's missing the actuation mechanism for the butterfly, the butterfly itself is present. On these you can get electric, manual and water-controlled ones - you'd think that any of them would fit the base carb but I'd rather not find out the hard way if they don't.

If this is similar, there's got to be some place to drill a 1/16" hole to put a manual cable into.

I would eye ball part #4 in the top photo.

I have a water choke 32/36 sitting on my garage shelf. I also have a box of random parts that contains two other 32/36 carbs - at least the pieces of them. Which type of choke do you think used to be on there and which type would you want to try to fit?

The normal recommendation for the Celica when buying a new 32/36 is the electric choke, but IIRC the original carb is water heated so the water choke would work, too. Just means I probably have to tweak a couple of the coolant hoses but that shouldn't be a big deal.

It does look like the mounting for the choke is the same for most types apart from the manual choke which only uses 2 of the three mounting points. The problem I have is that everything is missing including the choke mount "base". I can get all the parts online but buying new will put me close to the price of a new, correctly jetted Weber .

So in other words, if you're willing to part either with the water choke carb, its choke mechanism with the mounting screws (basically everything that bolts to the carb or happen to have an electric choke mechanism flying around, I'm all ears.

Let me look in my parts box and see what is in there.

I want to keep my intact carb at this point at least until I get my car up and running on Megasquirt. Until then I am too paranoid to let the carb and manifold go. If I have the choke parts in my box I'll let you know.

In reply to T.J.:

I'd recommend just getting a corretly jetted 32/36 with electric choke from Redline or TWM. Playing with jets can get expensive and tiresome for a daily driver. Also, some of the parts are NOT interchangeable on the chokes and high idle controls. You have to make sure you get the right parts for your carb. Some of the parts are also discontinued...I ran into this problem on my 82 Starlet with a 32/26. The high idle control lever's connecting rod worked itself loose and was lost. I called Redline and was rather unhappy to hear the part was no longer available new. So, I bought one online but found out it wouldn't fit because it was for the other version of the 32/36...I was able to make it work though with some trial, error, and rebending of the rod.

I guess we'll see what T.J. can find, otherwise I'll probably take the Redline option, but in that case I'll most likely get a 38 to have 'room' for additional engine mods.

But I guess before I do that I should go and at least do an engine compression check.

You don' need no steenken choke. Jus pump the E36 M3 out of eet.

That works fine to start it, but the idle on it is very poor when it's warming up. I don't know if it gets better when the engine is warm because I can't get it to idle for long enough...

If you end up going with a different carb, keep me in mind. I'd like to upgrade the Holley 5200 we have on our Chevette Chump/Lemons car to a 32/36.

Good luck, hopefully you don't have to go that route though.

Yes, Weber choke systems are interchangeable. I swapped the water choke on my 32/36 to electric from another 32/36.

If you need a spare carb, I have a used 32/36 that has an overfueling problem that I'm getting rid of for cheap. I had another new one so I never really investigated the problem other than replacing the needle valve.

Does it have one of the choke assemblies on it? That would at least get me going and allow me to check if the engine's any good.

In reply to BoxheadTim:

Tim I have a water choke if you want it. I have three others. One is on a functioning carb and the other two have one of the water inlet pipes broken off the housing. I dug it out of my box yesterday. I can send some pics. If you are interested, let me know.

You. The electric, water and manual chokes are all interchangeable.

Hey, sorry Tim. I didn't notice this thread bumped up and I had someone buy the carb off me shortly after you asked

No worries - it's beginning to look like I need to pull the engine anyway and at that point I'm seriously considering going to sidedrafts & sod the expense.

Would be nice to get the existing engine running, though.
