So I replaced the valve cover gasket on the 4Runner last night. I used a Fel-Pro kit that included the cam biscuits and the 4 grommets for the cover studs.
Here's were the issue lies: the original grommets pushed down into the cover leaving only about a 1/16 sticking above. The new ones only go into the cover about 1/8 and stick up quite far. I've had Advance and NAPA check and this is the correct gasket kit for my truck.
You can see the difference in shape.

Here's what it looks like on the cover with the original grommet.

And with the replacement.

I've seen engines that look like they've used the grommets I have on engines that are clearly rebuilt. Am I sweating this for nothing? I don't want to special order from Toyota as they are non-returnable. I don't want to turn a $12 job into a $30 job.
Any thoughts?

I can't see why you wouldn't just give these a shot as long as you've got sufficient threads on that acorn nut...
Odd, perhaps, but I don't see why they wouldn't work.
In reply to Appleseed:
How bad are the originals? Could you put a smidge of RTV around the base of the old one to get it to seal?
Personally... The auto parts store ones look like crap, I'd avoid them....
I forgot to mention the originals are rock hard and shrunken. I had to back them off the studs as they "threaded" themselves onto it. The replacements do look like crap, I agree.
Yeesh, the ones on my 4Runner look like your originals. Any chance you can check another parts store? Maybe your motor is from a different year? A swap that the PO forgot to mention?
Update: The grommets squish down more than I thought. Not quite as low as the originals, but not as high in the pics as they were finger tight. I made the go as tight as I could by nut driver.
The Fel-Pro kit lists from 83 to 95. I'll take a pic in a bit.
