I realize that's probably due to the fact that I've only posted in topics as opposed to starting one, but nevertheless, thought you might want to know.

EDIT: Nevermind. It's working now. Maybe something transient.

EDIT2: Hmm. Clicking on Latest Topics give me the same error page.

EDIT3:........... I give up. It's working now too.

Actually, there could be, if it doesn't have to resize the image. If it does, it throws away all but the first frame. So, if the animated gif is < 55 px wide, it'll still be animated.

Personally, I turn off animated gifs in my browser anyway. Hate 'em. But that's how you can still have an animated gif.

Stream of conciousness here without having read most of the replies...

Grr - it still hates my name. Probably the biggest reason I never post on Classic. I've got the exact same name on roughly 20 boards, and this is the only one that doesn't know how to deal with a space.

Roughly 1/3 of my screen is sidebar.

Colors, fonts, etc. look to "mac-y". Give me normal colors and 10 point Arial and I will love you forever.

Avatars are small.

I like the current board better.

I still like V-Bulliten better than that.

Time to go home - I'm sure there will be more (if the damn name thing doesn't frustrate me to the point of only talking to you guys once a year in gainesville.)

Dave, go to your profile and set "preferred name". Problem solved. As I understand it, not allowing spaces in the usernames is a security feature of some kind. Anyway, set preferred name and your name will appear as you like it.

Sidebar is well covered elsewhere.

Mac-y? Don't know what to tell you on that one, nor do I know what "Normal" colors would be. It's just red, black, white and gray, pretty much same as always. As for the typeface, most likely you're either seeing Verdana or Arial, considerably bigger than 10pt (that'd be SMALL on screen)

Avatars.. yes they are. If you want to see 'em larger, you can go to the person's profile, but keeping them small helps the page load faster, reduces clutter, stays on the grid, and leaves more room for the post.

Keep me posted on what else you got, though. Can't agree with you on vBulletin, as I find it to be the clunkiest, most annoying board out there, but if there's particular features it has you'd like to see, I may be able to accomodate you.

I manually updated your post count. You'll see your title refresh after a post or two.

Dave, sorry if that sounded curt. It was dinner time 'round here and I was trying to hurry. I do want it to work well for you, and there's actually been a lot of your past comments taken into account for the redesign. If you have any suggestions for improvements, or there's any particular things that aren't working for you, by all means let me know, and I'll see what I can do.

Also, realize that this is an ALL new site. No more duct tape and bailing wire holding things together, and there's A LOT more to it than just the board.

  1. Where is my profile. I've looked for 10 minutes.

  2. Sidebar - All I saw was "I've got my reasons." Between the huge sidebar on the left and the big one on the right, only half of the screen is actual content.

  3. The post formatting is readable. Names are some weird font with too much whitespace. Titles are grey font on a grey background. Same for date and time.

  4. I actually identify people by their avatars at least as much as by name. Having small avatars makes this visual identifier tougher. Also, given how bandwidth heavy this site is (see also embedded video in the header) I can't imagine that avatars even move the proverbial needle.

  5. VBulletin - for all the times you tell me how bad it sucks, it's still the best user experience out there.

  6. Of course you're curt. I'm telling you that I don't like what you've been working your ass off on. Of course, neither of us should be surprised by that. We like VERY different things in a website.

Click on your ghosty avatar, that takes you to your profile page. From there, click on the tiny ass print next to your name where it says edit profile.

Hey, how did you make those sexy bullets?

Apparently ass did not make the cut for the filter, yes?

Profile: Go to "community", or click an avatar to jump directly to that person's profile. Let me see what I can do about making that a bit clearer. Open to suggestions.

Sidebar. Yes. There are a lot of reasons. I'm not even remotely interested in explaining them all, but they're good reasons and unless I think of a better solution that addresses them, the sidebar stays. Frankly, what you're seeing is 6 months work. If I was going to have a better solution to those issues, I suspect I would've found it by now.

By the way, what's your screen resolution?

Avatars: It's actually a bit kinder on bandwidth than the old one. The video isn't embedded and loads up reasonably fast even on a slow connection. Avatars CAN add up on bandwidth, but that wasn't the main reason for their size, which was mainly determined by -- in no particular order -- the grid, minimizing distractions and maximizing post space within the framework I had to work with.

vBulletin is the best user experience out there? Please. If I coded it, I'd quit. You're complaining about titles being unobtrusive, and vBulletin has you trying to sort out CAPTCHAS to do anything at all. Doesn't matter anyway. Vbulletin was completely and utterly unsuited for what we needed to do.

And I shouldn't have been curt. It's OK that you don't like it. The trick is to see what we can do to make you like it more. Believe it or not, a LOT of the things we did were based on comments you've made in the past, and if you look over the past couple days' threads, you'll see there's been a LOT of changes just in the past 48 hours or so, based on feedback from folks. I'm accomodating whereever I can be.

How big is your browser? Full screen? If not, widen it out a hair... just past 1200 pixels.

1280 x 1040 at work. The big bar to the right is gone, but the huge one to the left is still there. I suppose the issue at home is my widescreen. At home only 60% of the screen is content, while on the normal monitor at work, I'm closer to 75% being content.

Re: V-Bulletin - I figured out the right analogy. You know how in the monthly automatics vs. manuals argument, ChrisV will go on for pages about how automatics don't have to suck, and they are technologically superior, and they are more consistent, and 100 other reasons why everyone else is an idiot for not seeing the light, but at the end of the day people go, "That may all be true, but I still like my manual better." You are ChrisV in the board software argument. There may be 100 reasons why this is technically better, but at the end of the day, it just doesn't feel right while V-Bulletin does. I realize that this is a lost cause, but that's how it feels from a user perspective.

Oh, that stings. :nice:

I suspect Vbulletin feels right to you because you're used to it. From a usability perspective, it's a mess. Not saying mine's perfect, and I definitely wouldn't say it's technically better, but I sure as hell don't intend to make the same usability errors the vBulletin developers have, and at least with me you've got a pretty good chance of something you dislike getting changed.

FWIW, I like the old board quite a bit, but it won't do what we need to do... nor will any other off-the-shelf board that I know of.
