Case of just grab whatever fits you well until you get to the point where you're wearing it 8+ hours a day, then buy something with more thought, or should I look for a particular brand/type?

I'm just tired of burning holes in t-shirts.

Crocs?

As an occasional welder, I just have cheap walmart boots, dickies pants, harbor freight welding jacket, gloves, and hood.

Welding safety was something I slept through in my classes. I usually wear tennis shoes, tank top and sweats when I weld. You get used to the burns eventually laugh

I have the harbor freight gloves and helmet, they're all I reach for usually.

DC shoes are surprisingly resistant to spatter, so far.

I've been made fun of for welding in flip flops but I got burned worse when slag fell inside my boot and I couldn't just shake it off.  Gloves are nice but my big thing is the helmet.  I'd spend 5x the money on a good helmet than anything else.

I recently got a welding beanie to wear under my helmet when mig welding, particularly anything out of position. I'm tired of burning my scalp.

Gloves: I have some thin tig gloves, goat skin maybe? Good dexterity.

What kind of welding? MIG, TIG, arc?

The cheap green welding coats available at any welding supply store work pretty well.  For gloves, you need dexterity as well as protection from heat and UV so don't scrimp on them, Tillman is a good brand.

I use a Lincoln jacket, Tillman gloves (MIG and TIG) and a Kobalt helmet. Paired with long pants and leather boots I can weld all day comfortably.

Dont forget about your respirator, too. My welds got better (and my headaches went away) when I started wearing one under my helmet, especially for aluminum and stainless TIG work.

I have a generic welding jacket from my local welding supply store and I also picked up a leather "shirt" at the second hand store. On hotter days the shirt is a little easier to work in. Buy something large enough to move around in freely but not get in your way. Even a heavy denim shirt will work in many cases. I wear leather boots if I'll be welding near the floor because I sit cross-legged and I got tired of burning my socks and having sparks in my shoes. For gloves I have heavy ones from Harbor Freight and lighter Tillman MIG gloves.

I have some old-school leathers that were my grandfathers.  They're kind of a weird set-up - sleeves/shoulders and then a separate apron thing that snaps on.  Weird to put on, but comfortable and very protective.  Warm in the winter too.

I'm with Stampie on the helmet.  I spend $200-plus on a good Miller helmet and it's worth every penny.  Fit is great, operation is perfect.  Auto-dark is flawless.

I had a cheap auto-dark from HF and it always gave me headaches.  When the battery died I threw it in the trash.

Don't get it on your hootus.

But seriously... I stick with pretty normal stuff.  I don't wear crocs, but I don't always wear leather shoes.  I already usually wear cotton (inherently flame retardant).   I wear cheapy HF mechanics gloves.  Welding gloves are a royal PITA.  I don't know how many times I messed something up because just trying to hold the stinger I bumped the button and put a big weld flash on a body panel or a pretty new stainless tube bumper.  With mechanics gloves, you may still get an ouchy heat contact, but at least it's slow and progressive giving you time to take the glove off instead of getting instantly seared like a ribeye.

If I'm just going to be doing a 20 minute project, I put on mechanics gloves and a helmet and a bandana.  When you have long hair, it only takes one spark to melt off a chunk of hair which gives you 3 months of one curly chunk that never quite reaches the hair tie.

For longer projects, I will make sure my shirt has long sleeves so I don't get sunburned.

That's it.  No aprons or heavy leather.  T shirt, mechanic's gloves, and a helmet.  A GOOD helmet.  If I get a spark burn, it will heal.  If I systematically blind myself over the course of a few years, you can't fix blind.

Most of my welding is small projects where I'm just knocking out something quick, and I'm usually standing on my feet at a welding table.  A good helmet is critical because you just don't mess around with eyesight and it has a substantial effect on the quality of the welds.  I wear thin TIG gloves for MIG, and it's only a problem when I try to pick up a piece that's still red hot.  Also have a heavy cotton welding shirt from Northern Tool that I throw on.  It's a terrible idea to weld in shorts or flip flops, but I've been known to do it anyway for a quick project because Atlanta summer.  Spending my teenage years working in an iron foundry may have skewed my perception of risk as it pertains to hot metal a bit.  And I have a few pairs of decent casual shoes that I wish didn't have burn marks on top from weld spatter, it would have been pretty easy to just slip on my rubber mud boots.

Something to cover your scalp if you're follicly challenged.  Don't want sunburn up there either. :)

I have a leather welding jacket but in Georgia I rarely wear it unless I'm  working in a position that's actively throwing slag on me. I like the Tillman gloves too, but I just use their gen purpose model 1414. Of course I only weld flux core right now.
also, a good auto darkening helmet and welding hats. I started with a Harbor Freight auto darkening unit and don't realize how hard it was on my eyes until it died and I switched to a nicer one. It's just the better one from Lowe's but was a huge improvement.

I've been happy with these Tillman gloves, if I'm doing enough welding to bother putting gloves on.  Just tacking stuff or a few quick zaps I don't usually bother with gloves.

Can't say enough good things about my Miller Digital Elite helmet, X-Mode is very much worth the cost.

I'm using the Bay Cargo set, which is an apron, gloves, and a little pouch thing. Its heavy leather, but it will grow a fierce case of mold if you store them in the garage. Maybe its just a florida thing laugh
