Can someone edit the title so it's less racist
I'm soon going to be in the market for a toy. My budget is about $15k max. It doesn't really have to serve a purpose, beyond being something nice to have and drive when I feel like it. I would like for once to have a car that is nice cosmetically. I already have a miata (nice day car and backup autoxer), a 318ti (dd), dwarf car (autox), classic mini (project), and the wife has a rav4 for towing and her dd. Being a child of the early 80's, I lusted after 300zx's, fd rx7's, supras, etc. I figure maybe I should buy one. Any advice on which is a better choice? Or should I just buy a c5 or a cheap 996 c2? Or sell the ti and buy a 335...
I realize I'm all over the place on this. Help?

The FD is the most capable between the supra and zx...
Just keep the boost levels low and reliability mods and call it a day
FD RX7 all the way, no question. It's so beautiful.

FD. Drive it till it blows then drop in a real engine
Oooooooo boy.
Tough one.
$15k total budget? Or $15k budget to buy and then leave it alone?
$15k probably won't get you the true halo MKiv Supra (The 6spd TT), so pass.
$15k would probably get you a nice FD, like a really nice FD.
Buuuuuttt.... $15k would also either build you a NASTY Z32 300zx TT, or buy one already built.
So, as a total surprise from everyone who probably thought i'd jump in here with OMG TOYOTA!!!!!!
I vote the Nissan.

I'll bet you $5 that nobody will vote for that thing other than in jest.

I couldn't love GRM and the website more, and I don't want to be the PC police or anything, but:
"jap" is actually a really really offensive term. Like, up-there-with-the-N-word offensive.
I have one so I have to vote FD.
The 3000GT is lame.
I've seen LSX FDs for less than $15k
$15k will get you a very nice FD with room for reliability mods, or a 300ZX with tons of room in the budget (at the cost of difficult maintenance). You will only get an N/A Supra in that range, which is a sexy but pedestrian car, and the 3000GT is just...well...there's a coolant line that runs through the freaking transmission, if that tells you anything.

Absolutely true...it's a dated slur, but a slur nonetheless. I have a few Japanese friends who have gotten PISSED at light use of the term.
I wouldn't call 300zx maintenance "difficult," just time consuming. It's not HARD to work on, just lots of layers. Well-thought-out layers.
And they're quite reliable and ridiculously overbuilt. You won't have to work on it much if you start with a nice one.
sounds like you've got your street cars covered already, i'd make sure I had a capable ZAV in the fleet.
You could build a really bad-ass Land Cruiser inside of your budget.
There's an awesome dodge power wagon in OD green with a star on the door for sale near me. $6500...
I vote FD as #1. And 300ZX as #2. Can't go wrong with either IMO.
How much are nsx's going for?

In reply to icaneat50eggs:
Lowest I've seen was $19,500 for over 120k miles, in a black/black 96. It was nice, but not 20k nice.
To those suggesting lsx into the FD, there will be a very warm section in hell waiting for you.
Back it up a few years. Buy the most original mint condition 240Z you can for $15,000. These bad boys are only going up and up.
That's what I would do if I was looking to spend $15k.

Sorry about the slur. I didn't know that was anything other than a short form.
I like the lsx fd option a lot. Will $15k actually get me one that doesn't need a bunch more money to be decent? Where would I find one?
I do really like the 240z idea too. I am no closer to a decision...
I'd pick the Supra number one in total disagreement with everyone here.
We won a championship with one in IMSA in '96 (on pole every race) and it's easily the best track car here. Sure it won't have the outright speed of the RX7 but it's more fun on track, easier to drive at the limit, and does everything you want. And it does it without breaking down every 10 minutes. On track, it's a lot more fun than the TT we also raced. Supras are vastly underrated. In fact, they drive eerily like a first gen Miata with a lot more power.
Since you live in Canada, what about a JDM import? Like a 90's Skyline?
(We American's can't have nice things.... )
I just did a brief search, but some examples:
1996 Skyline
1996 Skyline V-Spec
And they have a Spec R FD on the main page, but the link seems to be broken.....
(*I know ZILCH about the company or their rep, they were just the first to show up on the Googles.)
