I put the L48 from my 75 Vette into a RWD 92 Safari. That's like 85% bolt in. Seems reasonable. Unfortunately I put a cam with too much overlap in it for the throttle body EFI to handle. I am disappointed I had to go back to the carb. That being said it runs a drives great.
I also have a 2.0 16V in my 87 Scirocco, but that's really nothing more than a bottom end swap. A 1.8t or VR6 is reasonable though.

I went with an LFX V6 and a 6L50e transmission in my 66 Chevelle. The car is light, thrifty and pretty fast.

Least questionable would be:
1. Straight replacement with same engine/drivetrain.
2. Replacement with same-brand but different engine that connects to existing transmission.
3. Replacement with same-brand drivetrain and ecu(s).
Everything else isn't "least questionable"
In reply to kb58 :
Doesn't it matter if the transmission is going to be swapped as well? Manual transmission where the shift lever pops up is pretty easy to deal with and an automatic even simpler.
Then finally what if the replacement is going into a pre EFI vehicle? Wouldn't matter what ECU would it? Especially if you pull the ECU from the same donator with the engine.

I have to think that by now the LSx Miata swap has to be one of the most unquestioned power to weight in a qualified chassis swap that you can do. Both pricing and performance expectations are well established, and they are both good.

Alfa twincam into a Cortina.
Local guy in BC had one. Cheaper, faster and more reliable than a Lotus Cortina. Not many people even caught on to what he'd done.
E36 M3 S50 into an E34 5 wagon . Planning on it when my current engine reaches 300,000 miles.
1.8 BP into a BG chassis 323. It's a plug and play swap (engine, transmission and ECU) to replace the sohc 1.6 and the swap yields about a 50% bump in power and there's an aftermarket for the BP, whereas the sohc B6 market is barren.
Also, it can be done, all in car and donor, even both running examples, for challenge money, there was a time that both could be had for under $500.
12a or a 1.6/1.8 BP into my RWD '80 GLC. Should fit like a glove.
In reply to hobiercr :
12A is a bolt in if you have an RX-3 crossmember.
In reply to Pete. (l33t FS) :
