In reply to John Welsh :
I love these. Tried to get the wife to get one as she learned to drive on a 15 passanger van (homeschool family obv). She was not as excited as I thought she would be. I also think the 5.6 is a sold motor.

You want something bigger than a GX460. Scratch off the 4Runner, Touareg, Cayenne, etc. As others have pointed out, it's either a Yukon/Suburban 3/4 ton, Excursion or the Sequoia. The 3/4 ton burban is the best huge tow rig, who cares if you think it's a mommy mobile, aren't all big SUV's?
Otherwise buy the Sequoia. I'd rather have one of those over either of the other two.
I love my Cayenne Diesel, it gets freaky gas mileage, is super comfy, has been pretty reliable, can tow 7700lbs but it's a mid to smaller mid sized SUV. The Touareg version is basically the same but is cheaper, just doesn't handle as well and the transmission programming is different. I like the touareg exterior styling better tho...

2008 excursion EL. King ranch so comfy with cooled seats. 9000lb tow rating.
Is this still the 5.4 with cam chain guide issues? I like it. A little more than I wanted to spend.
Seems nice. Certainly all the bells and whistles. Yeah, everything is more that it seems it should be. Hopefully you sold your truck for a price so high you never thought someone would actually pay that much!
There is a carfax attached to the sale listing. It took a couple of bumps up front, a couple for times. Looks like ti was traded in to the local dealer who kept it for a short while and then offloaded it at auction.
A simple google search of the vin brings up a 73 yr old lady as the owner and gives a phone number. I'd call her and get some "back story."

Excursions and expeditions aren't the same thing
i would love an excursion. Around here all are $20,000+. For that money 100 series is a better buy (for my needs)
2002-2006 escalade with 6.0l and HD transmission. Air ride is cheap to fix when needed and helps tremendously when towing.
COMFY. So comfy we cant find anything else to replace it with since anything newer has changed the sofas for ridiculously firm captains.
Such a good car I had to buy 2 of them. Have 170k on each and they show no signs of slowing. Tow 12-16 hours to track events with nary an issue and have ROOM to load my garage into them since my crap racecars always break at events.
In reply to grover :
Yes, pretty much all 5.4s have the cam chain guide issues. Shame, that is/was a really nice motor otherwise.
I'd personally stay away from any 5.4 Fords.
Really big SUV, you say?
Seriously though, how about a diesel Excursion? I assume more reliable than the V10 model.

+1
If you need truck-sized space, a Touareg/Cayenne will not be big enough. My beater/utility car/truck is an '04 Sequoia and it would probably check your boxes if it is not too common and normal. There are some good threads about the Sequoias on here and that's how I found out about them. Look at an '05 or newer for significant improvements. I slide 10' lumber in mine with the seats folded, or quickly pull out rows 2 & 3 and put all sorts of E36 M3 in there. Strap in grandkids or load it up with dogs, it loves the dirty jobs that the Touareg would rather not do.
Here is the result. 2008 Sequoia. Limited with tow package. 2wd. Non navigation but every other option, pretty much perfect. It needs tires and some other small projects but it's pretty great so far. 5.7L v8 that takes REGULAR UNDLEADED!!! 195,000 miles. haha. thanks for all of the advice.
My friend has a import car repair business. His advice, don't own a Porsche, BMW or VW SUV. Lease one for whatever period the warranty and then turn it in at the end of the lease.
