CAM is specifically for American cars. If you've seen 240's running, your club's scrutineer sucks at his job.

I would say great minds think alike but that would be an insult to mr. Nelson
You're fairly far from me, which is a shame, because a bunch of interesting El Caminos have popped up on Craigslist.

Interesting, as I live in Central Ohio and they are very rarely sighted around here.
Must weigh 3000 lbs, but still... A few unconsidered options
Obvious, but easy is doing a milder version of this car
Be all of our hero, build an autocross version of this
With a v8 of course...
Then theres this Idea
The short wheelbase gives a lot of possibilities for the Gremlin...
Squarebody S10s are cheap, lightweight, and v8 swaps/suspension upgrades are all well researched. You might have to add ballast to make minimum weight, but that's not a bad thing. Newer s10s would have most of the same qualities, just in a heavier form.
In reply to Javelin:
No. not legally anyway. Way outside the scope of CAM. You could see it run LsFest and optima but not CAM.

Friend of mine runs this. It'd probably be CAM if he didn't like race rubber, that lands him in EM. The car is a Beast and always a crowd favorite.

Yes. Maybe it bears repeating. CAM stands for "Classic American Muscle". Muscle and Pony cars.
And while the rules are fairly open, entering a former SCCA racing Pinto slightly softened for street use would be against the spirit of the class - people complain about "rules creep" - well, THAT'S often how it happens.
My 86 T/A with the 305 TPI/AUTO and T-Tops had a curb weight of 3405 pounds. I think the Pontiacs were heavier than the Chevy's.
Either way if go with an El Camino.

Actually also not legal. Leave it RWD and it's CAM legal. And also on my list of lust. Right now, this is #1 on my lust list:

Did yesterday have any influence on that?

A little. Ok... a lot. It's something I've been wanting to do for a while anyway. I loved my 89 9C1. And this whole CAM thing is perfect for a landyacht like that. With large tires. And brakes. Lowered. With a nasty little LSx truck engine.
But.... swingin that P71 around the cones, sideways was just too much!

It was awesome with the lights blazing and sirens screaming. Does it belong to a department?

You're right. I keep forgetting it's RWD only. I guess I can E36 M3can my Eldorado dream build too.
OK, so I spent the last 20 minutes of my lunch break making myself sadder. Koni has shocks, Hotchkiss has spring, umi has control arms, global west has front arms, addco/hotchkis on hte sway bars... About $2000 gets complete suspension make over, all new everything and upgraded and pads/rotors.
Got to stop looking.

Vega gremlin Pinto Chevette Etc are not legal for a classic American Muscle as they are under 100 inch wheelbase rule
Claimed running/driving big block '79 El Camino - $1,400 asking: http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/5829838362.html
Nice '78, asking quite a bit more (maybe too clean): http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/cto/5833150849.html

I saw that '79 last night thanks to this thread too. Price seems suspect, compared to the rest on c-list around here.
well, that "bigblock" is a small block with cast iron manifolds. So there's that. I wonder what else is suspect.
In reply to SEADave:
That "big block" car with "good race tires and wheels" is like two streets from me. It's clearly a 305 with an edelbroke and dry rotted all seasons on camaro alloys. If he's willing to lie that blatantly (or is that stupid) I don't want to deal with him.
As for the white one, too rich for my blood. $2000 is my cap, I've got about $1100 saved right now. These are the current my-heart-will-break-when-it-sells-before-I-can-afford it picks:

and I could bring this one home today, and I probably should, but it isn't really what I want and I don't think I'd truly be happy:
