Auto Trader is also pointing out the BMW 535xi and the 09+ S4 (V6 Supercharged/6-Speed/Quattro, not bad). Slim pickings!

I don't think a new AMG owner is going to swap to a 10 year old, 100K mile Volvo.

(And for the record, that car is berking sweet!)

Oh oh oh. With stock horsepower in the mid-300s, reaching 500 should be doable.

Wait. Still no H-pattern box. Damn. I don't think there are many options left. Especially not in a high-class, high-horsepower AWD car. If he's willing to open it up to RWD and just buy snow tires, the CTS-V is probably the right answer.

I want the one locally......its kinda a bright teal/blue 6sp v70r.

The bimmer is probably the one if he absolutely requires the manual.

Another vote for the RS4. I like the idea of AWD being part of the design from the beginning, not 'added-on' like the Merc or BMW.

STi - take the racer-boy wing off - my WRX had an RS trunk put on it.

Older Legacy GT's had a manual - same motor as STi, but for 500 Hp you are talking built motor anyway. Must use 6 spd trannsmission and shift nicely.

Not a Sedan, but I THINK it is available with 4 doors, stick shift, and all wheel drive, and a chip/tune/whatever should be able to get it to 500 hp:

A few tweaks on a G8 GXP should easily hit 500 hp, 415 from factory, 6 speed manual, 2008 year, around $35K

Here's one

The 335/535xi's are the only thing that comes even close to possible, and even then from stock to ~500hp might not be easy.

RS4 is an interesting car but power comes quite short, and they're not that fast if he's looking for just that. To get to the power level, it's forced induction time on a very complex engine/engine management system.

Might be able to get there with a new-ish S4/A6/7 with the supercharged V6...

Sad face.

I don't think bmw "added it" later......the bonus is, they don't have a fwd bias to their awd like modern audi does.

You must have missed the 335i dyno pull from the last page.....600+ rwhp and it looked remarkably stock in front and up top.

No FWD bias to any Audi other than those with the Haldex system (A3 and TT). A4 and up have a longitudional mount engine with the front halfshafts coming out of the side of the transmission.

"modern" Audis (as in the last 4-5 years) have the center diff setup for ~60% rear torque bias, previous to that it was 50/50.

I'll bet you a NICE bottle of hooch that the stock turbo's on the N54 can't even flow that much air.

Yes, it's well known an exhaust/intake and tune is good for 400hp crank (up from 300) stock.........but I've got a seriously hard time believing those turbos could DOUBLE their output.

To tell you the truth, he is not really a car guy. He is more of a status guy.

However, he has good taste in cars.

I am just not sure if I would have picked an HP number. I would be more of a hp to weight or 0 to 60 time to determine if it was a car I wanted.

The 335xi might be a good start. I will point it out to him and see where he ends up.

Thanks again!

I feel like every time I see a picture of a car like this that has all the tip-top "rally look" or "wheeling look" stuff attached to it, it's always sitting someplace dirty, but the car itself is always spotless...even the undercarriage....as if it has never actually touched a muddy road. Photoshop, or do they drop them into the terrain via helicopter or trailer them there? :)

Also don't really understand having all that crap on the roof when you have a perfectly good cargo area on an XC70...roof-mounted spare is super-annoying if you have to change a flat while wheeling, especially if it's a big/heavy size.

All that said, it's still awesome and now I have evil ideas.

Just tell him to buy whatever awesome car he wants for 500hp (regardless of AWD or not) for $70k, and then go spend $30k on a really nice used SUV or something for snow days.

I'm guessing he has a multi-car garage and can afford the insurance on 2 vehicles. at once.....

$100K is plenty of budget to buy a 335xi and put a couple of GT3071s on it.

ignoring the 500HP mark.. .

he can get a new shiny flashy B8 Audi S4. Add in the APR supercharger pulley and tuning and it's 400ish HP. 400+HP on 100 octane tune.
http://www.goapr.com/products/pulley_30tfsi.html

Otherwise I agree with the other suggestions. Buy RWD, and a 2nd winter vehicle, or just drive an automatic.

This. If i had a 335xi and $100k, and i was forced to spend all the money on that car, i'd end up well north of 1000whp.
