finally decided on the BMW 128i for my next vehicle. 6MT, hardtop, sport pkg or not if I can't find it.
Good luck! I have been looking via nationwide searches on autotrader/cargurus/cars/ebay/carmax for a 128i without a sunroof for 6 months now, and I've only encountered 1 that was a 6 speed.
A long time ago in a different century a glossy UK weekly wrote a decent head to head between the new DelSol and the 2nd Gen Mister Two driving both over some twisties in the sceptered isle and came to the conclusion they drove differently.

I'm assuming that he means the coupe (with or without sunroof) as opposed to the convertible, unless I am mistaken.

Yes, the coupe. Sorry. I know what you mean. The 128's went from thick on the ground 3 weeks ago to hard to find with a manual. If it comes down to it, The chassis and manual are the most important features. I don't care for a sunroof but I'll take a car with one and never use it. Ultimately if I have to bite the bullet and get a 135 because there are no 128's available I'll live with that choice. :)
Wait for a good 128i, at least if you plan to drive it a lot. Not having to deal with the temperamental HPFP and its plumbing (just pulling the valve cover on an N54/55 is quite a task) and the turbos is worth it (well, it was to me). The one thing you definitely want - in addition to the manual - are the sport seats, though.
N55 doesn't have near the injector/coil/HPFP problems as the N54.
Low mileage N55 cars are still pulling much more $$$ over N54 cars. I'd pass on any N54 car owned by a youngin. Many are using piggyback modules to boost the hell out of them and beat on them. Then pull it back off and you'd never know unless you look.
