Another possibility:
But the ones in your budget are gonna need some work. No anymore reliable than the RX8 I think.

Too many BMW fanboys on this forum.
E36 325is was gonna be my suggestion, which comes with a factory limited slip. Hell, you can even find the occasional not super sketchy M for $5k (actually emailed about one last night.)
Zero reason that wouldn't fit the bill, they're wonderful handling cars from the factory and really aren't the maintenance queens some like to make them out to be . The issues pretty much boil down to a cooling system and bushing refresh every 100k or so. They're well designed and pleasant to work on and parts are quite reasonable.
In short, there's good reason a lot of us are fanbois

Link? Any interest in a Miata as a partial trade? (See my "garage")

No link currently, I've been waffling on selling it and just recently made up my mind. Hmm.. Somewhat interested in a miata.

This or something similar. It might be me but since so many boost mobiles are on the market these don't seem to command what they could or used to. I had a difficult time selling my two owner 144k mile car on Konis and semi hstreet setup for 6.2k. two months ago. They are in that weird range where financing is hard and finding someone to pay that kind of cash is harder.
You can find an EM1 for that money. It'll probably have some needs, but nothing that'll keep you from getting to work till you have a free weekend to fix it.

Out of all the choices here, the only car he can get for 4-5K that won't require any work is a B15 Spec-V.
Bought my 2006 Spec-V for 4K a little over three years ago. For the first two years, the only thing I did was replace one rear wheel bearing. Than the flywheel broke and I did a bunch of "might as well while I'm in there".
I would have no problem driving across country right now. And it's a 2.5-3K car.
