Sounds like the Crx is no longer comfortable as the DD? Brain storming for Bravenrace will begin......now.

Okay, how about a '91 NA MR2 with 75k on it for under $8k? What kind of real world mileage do these get? Looks like a nice car and it's not that far from me. But I know next to nothing about them.

Should get near 30mpg rather easily.
I wouldn't pay "under $8k" for a 91, though, unless it was significantly under $8k and in the most incredible condition ever.
Maybe $5k.
But otherwise, they're great cars. A true daily liveable sports car.
Also, only 2 seats, i assume we're throwing out that requirement?
I saw that MR2 but passed because of no back seat.
If NA then it is a Camry engine with all the good Camry mpg traits.
www.fueleconomy.gov says 19/22/26 mpg with individuals bragging up to 30mpg.
Values on MR2's just seem to be going up so you could likely drive this a few years and still get your money back. Of course negotiate down since $8k is the high, high end.
If you do drive this car, be sure to take it on Rt105 West which is a pretty fun road in an area of otherwise boring roads.
I sold this car in 2004 and I miss it dearly. On the other hand, I did own it for 4 years and 25k miles and sold it for a slight profit even considering what I paid and what I improved.
When you add up the two trunks and small spaces behind the seats, etc; the MR2 is much larger and more usable than my Miata.
If you look hard and get a V-6 with a manual, you may get one around $10,000 and get close to 30 mpg highway. Other than that, older BMW's, miata, mr2 is all I can think of.
2nd gen MR2s are a blast. 30mpg will be borderline, you'll be right around that number. But it's 2 seats only.
If you're willing to compromise the RWD, how about a Honda Fit Sport? Newer car with modern stuff, 40mpg is realistic, reliable, all the room you'd ever need, pure fun to drive. A bit slow, but otherwise awesome.
If you are looking at 2 seaters, consider the 3rd Gen mr2. Much easier to find with good mikes than a mk2, the convertible is more watertight then the t-tops, more fun to drive(I have an 01 and have had a 93), and they get 30 MPG when you beat on them an 33+ when you don't. That's on the highway. And beating is a 25 mile whinedy road that I average 75 on.
2002-2003 Audi TT Quattro. I have seen some around $10,000 or less. The highway mpg is close to 30, around 26.

No, let's forget the 2 seaters. I wasn't thinking about that when I found the MR2 ad. And "close" to 30mpg isn't good enough. Has to be clearly over that at normal freeway speeds.
I like the BMW 318is idea. The problem seems like it's going to be finding one. I liked the one posted earlier, but I hate that color interior. There don't seem to be any for sale within several hundred miles. Oh, and Fletch - The CRX is getting modded for ST autocrossing. So no, it's no longer comfortable for the daily commute. The kids don't mind it, so they'll be using that one. Plus, by next fall they'll both need a vehicle to drive, so I need something else.
I am pretty sure a 4 seat two door with 30mpg+ and modern stuff doesn't exist. The BMW doesn't hit that.
Saaaaay, what kind of mileage does an M3 get???

Cell phone number given comes back to Eylria, OH. If it is there I will offer to take my e30 over and give this one for a test drive.
In reply to Fletch1:
That one is a little rough for what i'm looking for. I want a nice car, not a project. But thanks!
Fletch1 wrote: Man. Anything modern with Awd/Rwd with 30+ mpg is tough.
Hence the title of the thread.
KA24/SR20= motor possibilities in the Nissan 240sx. Checks all the boxes. I know many of them are available already swapped with the SR20DET (the japanese market turbo motor for these)... I've had good luck with MPG out of boosted cars. Though I know the KA24 (the common US market motor, N/A, basically built for a truck) is a decent motor too, and strong. I don't know how well 240's do MPG wise, and the drift tax might get you. When they're clean though, MAN are they good looking.
