A coworker came across this and I'm stumped.  It's a 79 Chevy C10 with a 250cid 6 cyl and a 4 speed.  Now what is going on with the engine?  The 4 tubes coming out of the valve cover and the dip in the middle of the valve cover where rocker arms should be.

That's just a crappy old integral head 250. Back then GM was trying to church it up so they called it the 4.1L engine.

Last one I had I barely found someone to buy it for 50 dollars and it was a good runner. Some dudes backdate to the older style head.

But what is the tubing running to the valve cover?

It's emissions plumbing.

The tubes run from the exhaust manifold to the valve cover and have one way valve that are visible in the picture where they go into the valve cover. There is also a strange gasket set up where there is a thin metal plate that separates the intake plenum from the exhaust, a 2 bbl carb with vacuum secondary.

They are an easy swap to a SBC. There are holes in the front cross member so you can move one motor mount to get mounts to line up with the SBC mounts.  The flywheel, bell housing, and clutch will bolt right up to your favorite flavor of SBC other than 400.

The starter and many of the accessories will move over to a SBC, but I forget if the brackets move over or not. Since it's HEI ignition, there's little or no reworking required for the swap and most sensors for the gages just plug in (you can move sensors over),  and you can find hoses, belts, and exhaust parts for the swap right on the shelf at most parts stores.

In high school I drove a 1977 Chevy Malibu Classic Coupe with a 250cid and 1 barrel carb.  OMG, was that car slow.  But, it ran very reliably, just slowly.   I remember that the engine looked silly small in the enormous engine bay that was large enough for a 454cid.
