The seller I bought the Honda from took a quick look and thought it was a Ford 9". The more oval sort of shape indicates a 8" doesn't it? Worth anything?

Thanks!

I swear that looks like a 9 incher to me, and yes they were oval housing. The only thing that throws me is the pinion bearing housing does not unbolt. Both the 8 and 9 inch had a removeable pinion bearing housing.

I'm guessing it's a 1955-1964 Chevrolet rear axle. There's a picture of one in this thread: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-and-c2-corvettes/1470163-advice-on-the-rear-axle.html They used to be easy to find and cheap, but they're not particularly strong. Check to see if you can find 'GM' cast into the center section.

Unless it's some obscure vintage, it's not a Ford rear. None I've ever seen have that pumpkin design. I'm also guessing an old GM rear of some sort.

Hmmm ... that does look like this Corvette diagram

Going by this pic, yeah it probably is a olde olde GM rear axle.

Looks like a Ford 9" to me.

Edit. But I think I'm wrong. Further investigation leads me to suspect it's something called a GM 8.2 dropout differential.

I think it might be a '57 Chevrolet something or other.

This looks pretty similar http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=201274

It's definitely not a 9" There's no plug on the back of the Ford, and while they're slightly oval, they're much more round that the diff in that pic.

Timken made a similar axle. It was used on the really old Jeep pickups. Ford also had a similar design. Without identifyimg tags or marks it is really hard to tell.
