It's a tarted up Camry.

The Celica died when it went to FWD.

Toyotas all over, is that black box a 'Yota?

Yep, it's a Celica. I actually rather like that generation, though by that point Toyota wasn't selling the truly quick ones in North America anymore.

I disagree with the "tarted-up Camry" comment, they shared a drivetrain in the US, but there are more differences than similarities. The 3S-GE GT-S models are actually quite excellent cars and then of course we got the Turbo All-Trac for two generations as well.

Guess they did not leave much of an impression on me when they were current; the FWD would have made them invisible in my mind.

Yep, but only with an automatic and the 1ZZ.

I know they aren't very sporting, but the first of the FWD Celicas from 1985 to 1989 seem kind of nice.  I sat in a convertible from that generation once and they seemed about perfect for a small, slightly sporty, space & fuel efficient car.  Sort of like what the last Mercury Capri should have been like.

The generation that started this thread would have been a lot nicer if they hadn't screwed up the styling with all those headlights.

It's heart is beige.

There's no curing that.

I'd have an all-trac but that's about it.

I just picked up a st165 all trac and there isnt a hint of beige to it.

Unless I'm mistaken, that generation Celica had mounts for the all trac suspension, which is the same, or at least, very close to the RAV-4, so a homebrew all trac is doable. Of course, they have to be right at the 25 year rule now.

5S-FE < 3S-GTE

FWD < AWD

A Barracuda and a Hemi 'Cuda aren't the same car either.

I would love a 1st generation Celica, the best generation of them all, IMO:
