Today I had to replace the negative battery cable on my SW20, and I found this tubing. It appears to be connected to some sort of valve on what I think is a heater hose. Am I on he right track?

If so, is it some kind of drain? If that's hte case, I'm kind of wondering why a previous owner coiled it and aimed it more or less at the battery.

Is there a drain somewhere in the frunk I should connect it?

Bleed tubes for the coolant system. You run them up the hood, open the valves, and they let the bubbles out of your coolant system. Nicely engineered car, the MR2

Interesting, thanks. In the second pic you can see the rod connected to the valve--it appears to go into the cabin. Is there a lever somewhere in there connected to that rod?

That's the valve for your heater, and those are technically heater hoses, but they do carry coolant.

It is hooked to that the slide in the middle.

OK. That was my guess until you told me about the bleeder valve.

Thanks again.

That rod will adjust your sliding temperature control/hvac unit (push it in for warmer, pulled out for colder)

As stated, the tubing is for bleeding the coolant system.

I tried it once, but didnt do something right, it's a complicated system with 4 diferent parts to drain the coolant and quite the process to burp the system.

I'll have to flush coolant at some point, I'll be looking to the Bob Pham videos on YouTube for help. He's got a lot of DIY videos that are pretty good

There is another one (or at least a port for it) that is located on the top of the radiator on the left. Both of these are strung up when bleeding the coolant. In my experience, it helps to jack up the back end of the car as well. The BGB (big green book factory service manual) outlines the procedure, and is widely available free online.

They still have that in the next generation mr2. It worked well for me and I never had an issue with coolant air bubbles after the engine change out in mine.
