Going to be spending a week at the condo in Sarasota next week and I already have a round trip booked, but hey - why not buy something and drive it back home.  Bench racing here, but wanted to think out loud.

What would be a good candidate to buy cheapish (sub $5k) and drive back to the land of rusted E36 M3 boxes and flip for $$$profitz$$$?  I'm thinking civic/integra?  Anything else?  What's something people want in rust-free form?

1991 Mazda Miata MX-5 - cars & trucks - by owner - vehicle... (craigslist.org)

Throw a wrap on it and sell it up north for $8-10k

You said fly/drive, not just drive.  Five mins Googling says something like this is easily under $5k used.  Plenty left in the budget for clothes to keep you warm in transit. devil

Truck might be a bit more up front, but I think could be a better return.

Honestly if you bring back a nice Miata and accidentally drive by my house, it might be sold before you made it back home...

That's the kind of bad idea that we should enable.

To make money? The cleanest 10-20 year old truck you can find. Nothing rusts here. Of course, nothing is inspected here, either, so mechanical condition is far from guaranteed.

To have fun? Have a seat and let me tell you about my friend the fully depreciated rust-free malaise-era luxury car! An 80s Cadillac would be fun.

Seems like there is at least 30 people in Butler County alone that already does this.

See if you find something in the area that you like and we can talk.  Or this:

A quick look on CL didn't bring up anything. I'll have a poke around FB later today.

That NB might be an option.

Since your profile says home is Pittsburgh, a hilly place, then my answer for profit is 4wd.

Sure truck is the best answer but even a mundane SUV could be the answer.  Everyone wants a SUV so demand is high.

I would look for some outliers. For trucks, look at Ford Sport Trac, the ole Explorer made into a 4 door pickup.  Similar sized to the new Maverick.

Ford Escape of '10-'12 (last of the square body)  gets the nice 2.5L 4 cyl. They rust really bad in the wheel wells causing shock mount failure.

XJ Jeeps are bringing crazy money!

Sedans are dying in popularity but if you can find one, FL might not see an AWD sedan as valuable as Pittsburgh would.

you were probably looking in the "runs and drives" section.  you'll never find a Biturbo in there.

What do you like?  A rust free two tone '53 Chevy with a continental kit that was Grandma's for $2k, but if you hate it?

Track car?

Rally?

What do you like?

Heh .

Not having much luck finding something that appeals that's not in the "I'd like to look at it in person first" price range.

OTOH I appear to have found all remaining Nissan Z32 convertibles...

I just spent a week in a condo in Sarasota and I was underwhelmed by the cars for sale on Facebook.  Prices all seemed too high, but then again, none of them were rusty.  Two things I found fairly cheap down there were MGBs, especially MGB LE versians, and Hyundai Genesis.  Pre game before you go down.

I was under the assumption that there would be tons of high end low mileage old people cars.  Just not the case, but I was astounded how many really nice newer expensive cars there were.  Sarasota sure has changed for the better over the last 25 years.  Lots of money there now. Went the whole week and saw less than 5 classic cars, and that includes a group of landscapers working out of a 1980s pickup truck.  Lunch outside at Ormand Beach was like a cars and coffee event for exotics.  My wife was almost run over in a parking lot by an old lady driving a Jag F-type R coupe.  At least she would have died at the hands of one of the best sounding cars ever, so that would have been a sure ticket into heaven.
