SWMBO comes home in the Jag, passenger side front door rub strip is flopping around. I take a look, and it's only held on by some kind of double-sided sticky foam (R/C guys, just like "servo tape"). This is how a luxury car is constructed?
Any suggestions on how to remount? The Jag's the only "nice thing" she's ever had, and I hate that it looks so ghetto now. Some of the tape stayed stuck to the car instead of the trim when it finally fell off, so ideas on removing that to get a clean surface to remount would also be welcome.
body shop supply - 3m makes some double-sided tape that will fix it up. Ask them about best solvent too.
heat gun for removing old tape
You'd be surprised how many people/shops use that 3M tape.

That 3m tape is scary. Once it's on, it's not coming off. Unless you really want it to.
I would be tempted to use acetone, because I have a love/love relationship with it. But I'd only use it if you were never going to see the surface you are prepping ever again.
Thanks, everyone! I'm off to find bodyshop supply stores.

"Bestine" brand rubber cement thinner. It will clean just about any kind of adhesive goo, doesn't leave residue, and is remarkably kind to painted surfaces of almost any type.
Removal is just time. Re-installation is with 3m two sided tape, and now is the important part: Get the adhesion promoter wipes when you buy the tape! I've tried making that stuff stick without it, and its 50/50 at best. I now get my bodyshop friend to do it for me.
Air tool for tape removal.
You can get just the pads at NAPA if you already have a die grinder. Chemicals just kill the paint and take forever.

Non-acetone nail polish remover is great for removing residue from decals.
And you'll have some left over for your toes
funny how well that tape sticks anything to anything. My 91saab seemed to have some holding on some "molding" to the side.. nasty nasty stuff to get off
Those eraser wheel things will make short work of the remaining tape.
the side skirts on my infiniti are held on by double sided tape...I was pretty shocked when I saw it. I periodically have to press it back on . Eventually Im gonna break down and pull it off, remove th eold failing tape, and use the 3m stuff to re-install.
Use a heat gun followed by Oops Remover Took decade old trim adhesive off my corolla in minutes with a cotton towel and some elbow grease.
This is good to know, I'm replacing a fender on a tercel I've got, but had peeled off the side moulding to repaint the new one, it was stuck right on there!
