they put weird weights on some of their cars and trucks for some reason... harmonics or vibration or something.. been doing that since at least the 70's..
NVH weight. (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness). Basically they found some harmonic that they could tune out with a giant weight. Take it off.
They call it the "dog bone" in Mustang circles. It's there for you to take off and then gives you some holes to mount other things to, like a torque arm.

i've seen them on old Fox Mustangs(my 79 had one) and Thunderbirds as well as 80's and 90's Crown Vicks and pickups..

NVH damper weight. It's not strictly necessary. If you're swapping, it probably doesn't do you any good since you're changing the dynamics that it was hopefully tuned for.
They put those things on everything. Subframes, exhaust pipes, control arms, everything.
(I kinda liked the harmonic damper that Ford built into the driveshaft on my first T-bird. I wish I could put something like that on the RX-7, maybe the transmissions would live longer)
For all who wonder- that's out of a 1993 exploder. 3.73 trak loc and ....sigh... Drums brakes. But I picked up it and the short axle I needed for the Celica for 50$.
In reply to Trackmouse:
The drums are better than the discs. The Exploder discs are solid (not vented), have really crappy single-piston sliding calipers that like to bind up (IIRC the piston screws, too), and still has an integral drum brake for the parking brake.
