I need to get a set of tires for the wagon. Looking for something that will work for autocross and be OK to the autocross. I've got 17x9" wheels and looking at 275/40/17s. Price is an issue. I'd like to keep it under $200 a tire.

I loved my old azenis on my mazda, and those were cheap. 204 bucks now for the 275s (discount tire) I saw nitto Nt05's for 167. How are the nitto's?

Tire rack shows the Kumho XS for 179....but they are backordered.

How much are Hankook Ventus R-S3's at that size?

I did love the Falken Azenis Rt-615's on the GTO though...

What are they running on the police Fords in your area? Even better, the police Tahoes?

No R-S3 in that size.

Police cars? Usually goodyear RSA's. Which aren't available in that size, they are $224 from tirerack in the current police size which is 235/55/17. Or $159 in the older 225/60/16 interceptor size.

Looks like Azenis or Nt-05's

I'd take Azenis over Nitto's every time.

From googling comparisons, the nittos might be a better choice. And for 618 vs 766 dollars shipped...

Let's hear some more NT-05 vs Azenis comparisons!

I did Azenis (albiet 215's) on my mustang (245/45/17 3300ish lbs) and it required spraying for autocrosses as they go off grip with heat (western MD, so similar climate to you)

I hear 615's are a bit better then the 215's in regards to heat, but that it still is a factor.

They will work and work well, just have a tire sprayer ready.

I suspect that the NT-05's will be a good amount faster and better for auto-x, but last significantly less mileage on the street.

265/40-17 Star Specs? Yeah.. it gives up 10mm of width, but it's a reasonably proven tire and pretty close in diameter (25.4 vs. 25.6). $166 ea from TireRack.
