I just pulled my drywall mudding stuff out. I hate that I own these tools and have gotten so much use out of them. I want my life to be one where floating drywall is a thing I don't have to do.

So that got me thinking about other tools that I hate to pull out. Spring compressors. Terrifying. Why can't springs and shocks be sizes so that I don't have to face death to fix the car. EZ outs. Maybe I can stop breaking stuff and then I'll never need them?

What do you want to not own?

I live in the rust belt, so the grinder-reciprocating-saw torch combo.  When these come out it just means more bolts, bushings to buy and an unfinished project.

Maybe I should just take every car I buy completely apart after purchase dunk all parts in anti-seize then reassemble to save myself from the future.

Boy, I think you nailed it with the drywall stuff. I was just looking at mine the other day and wondering whether I can goodwill them at this point instead of moving them into the new house. There is, of course, some stupid part of me that wants another crack at it so I can do better than the last time, but for crying out loud, I'm not going to get good at everything, and it's not like I want to hone my drywall skills for future use.

My non-cabinet sandblaster. It's slow, tedious, and being the "find an open area" version, you get sand in places you didn't know you had places. I'm pretty sure the set of wheels I blasted took at least seven years to do over the course of two afternoons. I'm sure my future with cars will involve more blasting, but if I play my cards right, get very lucky, and maybe push things a bit, I can either farm it out or do it in a cabinet.

When I build my own house, it will not have drywall.

Tile setting stuff.

I -hate- putting in tile, the only reason I bother with it is because nothing else will last as long.

My yoyo. It may go by other names in other areas, but it is the tool you use to tie rebar together with before you pour concrete.

I guess yard tools.  Everything else, while I hate some of them, either makes me money or brings me pleasure(or saves me a ton of money), but yard work can berkeley right off

I once bought a lot of state surplus that came with an interesting device labeled "Branson Sonifier Ultrasonic Cell Disruptor." My friend Jim was helping me unload and check the stuff out, and we were both curious about it, so we plugged it in and turned it on. At first nothing seemed to happen, and then what can only be described as a sensation on par with the "Pain Box" from Dune erupted in the back of both of our heads. It was like a steel spike was being forced into the very center of our brains. Jim fumbled for the power switch for a bit and I finally lunged out and unplugged the thing. We took a few minute's break to recover. When we got back to it, we noticed that the "Output Control" (power level) was on 2. Of 10. We never spoke of the device again, and I gave it to a friend of mine that had a fondness for old laboratory equipment. That's a tool I never want to own again.

An example of the device in question, but not the one I owned:

I think that's even the style of probe it had attached to it. One might question the wisdom of turning on a device labeled "CELL DISRUPTOR 200," but again I've never claimed to be smart. Just curious.

I just remembered that I have a toilet snake because I sometimes need a toilet snake. More than once. Because my children think more toilet paper will help a clog or something. I'd love to not need to own one.

Jack Stands. I hate lifting and securing the car to work on anything. I want enough overhead room to use a proper lift. Do they sell air jacks for the Fiesta? I want those.

I still get sketched out jacking my car up and placing jackstands no matter how many times I've done it. When I can get my own garage, I plan on getting at least a quick jack for working on my car.

Thanks for sending me down THAT rabbit hole.  Apparently bad juju happens when you turn it on without the right tip/shielding/immersion.  You probably cut a few years off your life by messing with it......but they are the crappy years at the end so that's not all that bad.

You can find 2 kW, 20 year old CNC laser cutting machines that originally sold for a quarter-million on eBay for $20,000-30,000. That is not a bargain. And it probably won't fit in your shed.

Drywall stilts have always looked to me like the mother of all bad ideas. I'm not sure how long it would take me to have a terrible accident, but it would probably be measured in seconds...
