You will also want to bring a clutch and maybe a hood along with you, previous Challenge experience states these are commonly replaced items!

Commonly replaced? I been to a few races and never had to replace a clutch, but if you say so I can.

And why a Hood? What happens for people to replace their hoods?

Tools or items used on the car that are not on the car during the contest do not count against budget. Certain types of rollbars or cages don't count. Stock quality brake parts don't count. Fluids don't count. Everything else on the car in any part of the competition counts. The things that count are counted at the amount you paid and can verify. If you can't document your purchase price you need to somehow show evidence that the value assigned is reasonable. Finished Ebay auctions, craigslist advertisements, car-part.com listings, etc... work well for this purpose. If all else fails, start a thread posting a description of the part in question and let us determine FMV. Then print out the thread and put it in your budget. Thats the gist of the budgeting process. Their is some weirdness when it comes to trading, but most of it is pretty straight forward and logical.

So everything that is physically attached to the car that is not stock is counted into the budget that did not originally come with the car?

How about if i got the stock rotors Slotted? Do I just add the price for machining the slots?

Also if the engine did not come with the car and I have one lying around and installed it does that count towards the budget? Engine swaps are legal but counted into budget? How can everyone do engine swaps without going over budget??

I know the hood pin popped off on the one the Gainesville crew entered a few years ago. The quite gutted hood then flipped up and wrapped itself over the roof and smashed into the PO's poor attempt at a sunroof delete. Chunks of bondo everywhere. This didn't happen at the challenge. Nope, it happened 2 minutes before meeting someone who had agreed to buy it. I'm pretty sure the price dropped pretty significantly at that point.

Not everyone does engine swaps but those who do shop well.

The contest is all about what you actually spent on the car with some exceptions for safety. If you paid for it and it is on the car at the challenge it most likely counts towards budget. You should start your own thread with all these questions.

Bondo Chunks! lol Wrong way to delete a sunroof haha! Good thing I own 2 1990 GTUs with no sunroofs.

I have never had a problem with the stock hood latch coming undone at racing speeds but for safety sake, I will put some hood pins in.

Also anybody answer my previous question? If my car is a non turbo and i install a turbo motor i have lying around does that count into budget?

Yes, the turbo motor would could towards your budget.

For instance, say you bought a running N/A FC for $1000. You sold the motor for $500. You then shopped well and bought a turbo motor for $500 and installed it. Your budget for Challenge purposes would be $1000.

If, instead, you bought the FC for $1000, dropped the motor and put it in the garage, and then bought a turbo motor for $500 and installed it. That would put your Challenge budget at $1500.

if it's on the car, it's in the budget. the only things not counted against the budget are the safety items (including stock replacement brake parts) as mentioned in the post above.

so if you buy a complete car for $xxx, every single part that is on the car is covered by the purchase price. anything you sell off, rather than keep it on the car for the challenge, is deducted from the $xxx until $xxx =$1. Total deductions (aka "recoup") can not exceed

(EITHER) 50% of the challenge year -- ie $1005 this year -- (OR) 100% of the amount you spent on the source of what you're selling off.

Don't sell all the way down to zero! more on that later.

if you remove a part from the car and trade it to someone for some other part, then you put that traded part onto the car, you have to document the trade in your budget with an "FMV" (fair market value) for the parts on both sides of the trade, ie nobody's gonna believe you traded some worn-out snow tires on steelies for a set of A6s on Fikses.

Why not sell down to zero? because of the way the trade rule is written. it says you can only trade until the recoup limit is reached. so if you never reach the recoup limit, you can trade to your heart's content.

Examples: buy a $1500 car, sell $1005 of unnecessary parts, budget is now $495 but you've hit the recoup limit so can't put any more money back into the budget and you can't trade.

Or, buy a $1500 car and sell $1500 of unnecessary parts. budget is still $495 because you can't recoup more than $1005. no trading.

Or, buy a $1500 car and sell $1004 of unnecessary parts. budget is now $496 but you can trade your ass off. ;-)

read the rules. then read them some more. then figure out how what you want to do is legal.
