I should think of some new autocross tires for this season. I've been getting Hoosiers from John Berget, but I'm wondering if I should get something new (without spending a grand on autocross tires).
Thoughts?
On edit: Size will be 225/50-15 or 225/50-16. Car is this:
Better at what?
And RE71 doesn't exist in the 225/15 variety

This thread is relevant to my interests. The Runoffs-qualifier takeoff A7s I bought from JBT were OK, but they never ever reached the famed 'purple crack' status with me, and they were about $90 each. I realize that's nothing compared to what a sticker set would have cost, but it's not nothing compared to what I could get the current hot street tire for.

I'll add that 16" doesn't have a lot of good performance tire options, at least it didn't a few years ago when I looked.
I can say that i did use 225/50X15 tires on my '86 GT and they worked fine. On your car which is a Fox under a different skin they should work as well.
My car weighed around 3200# so yours should be lighter?
Are you really limited to the 225? That car looks like it should be capable of getting more rubber under. If you can fit a 275/35-15 you'll be better off.
First run (cold) the RE-71 is gonna be a bit better, but after that the Hoosiers will dominate. If you invite a co-driver to join you (tire warmer) you can get into the magic grip faster. If you're racing on asphalt Hoosiers are pretty amazing for the first 100 runs or so but even after that they will be really really good until they cord. Last year I managed some top 5 finishes on 200+ run A-7s because I set up the car well and had a co-driver.

Seriously. I'm running 225s under my Miata, and that weighs less, has less power and sits way lower.

My Corolla is actually a bit lighter than a Miata, and I would like to jam 245s under it.

With 240hp/180lb-ft of torque, I'd like 245s as well, but I need wider wheels, and if I'm going to get wider wheels, I want to flare it, so I'm making do with 225s for a season
Since you likely aren't competing for wins in that chassis, I'd just take whatever is the lower $$ per run route.
In reply to NickD :
You can fit a 275 hoosier on a 9" wheel under an NA with a fair roll and pull.
Used Hoosiers could depend on how many heat cycles.
Anything wider than 225/50 results in the tires trying to pull the fenders off the car if it gets crossed up, which is not uncommon with the Victor Jr.-headed 347. I'm willing to concede that it needs 315s, but this body is too nice to cut up. The next one will have box flares.
A tire warmer. That's a thought. Now if I could just find someone that can drive the damn thing without it being a spin-fest. Of course, every time I try to have a co-driver, the rest of the car gets pissed off. :/

I am also interested in this. To add one more option, what about brand new road race hoosiers for $120?

I wonder how long they would take to get sticky.
On my 1600lb Datsun I've used Formula Ford front tires all the way around for autocross Back then we did 3 laps, 1/2 way round the first lap they were up to temp, lap two they gripped like mad and last half off the final lap they were starting to get greasy.
My F500 obviously runs road race tires (Hoosier) and they actually do heat up.
I would go with used Hoosiers before a 200 tread wear tire.
yeah the fairmont/zephyr doesnt have alot of room up front for tires. im also curious about this.
Thanks for the input, all.
