It appears to be a car heater of some sort.

I’m guessing that was an aftermarket heater from the 1940’s. We’re spoiled when you think even a heater was optional at one point in time!
I used to have one like that in my CJ. It came from the seating area of an old school bus. The roof would steam and I had to drive with the window down.
Not exactly like that one but close, does it have an fan in it?
My mother bought my father a car heater for Christmas 1952. I had been born in May and Mom thought some heat in the car might be nice for all involved. The car was a 1950 Austin A40 (heaterless) and we were living about 50 miles northwest of Montreal.

It's similar but not exactly like my heater for my MGTD

Let me know if you decide to junk it. I've got an art project idea that it would be perfect for.
The front half pops off, look for screws. There's a fan behind it and possible an opening and closing flap on the bottom.
Cab heater for sure. You can still buy them, but that one would be pretty cool to install in a hot rod.
