There's a local U-Pull that just got in an '85 944 with sport package. It's got the sport seats (super rough) and Fuchs wheels (which I plan on getting), but I was wondering what other special bits might be on the sport package that my '84 944 might like to have.

There's not one "Sports Package", but rather multiple "Sports" options. There's a sticker under the hatch carpet with a bunch of 3-number codes (called the M codes or option codes). Here's a run-down of what you want:

M030 - Adjustable Sports Suspension: Has larger sway bars, stiffer bushings, adjustable Koni's, and beefier torsion bars. Grab everything, it's all worth $$$.

M456 - Non-adjustable Sports Suspension: Has F&R sway bars (but not as big as the 030 ones), and non-adjustable stiffer shocks. Grab the rear sway and shocks.

M383/M387 - Sports Seats: Will have LARGE bolsters. Can be all manual, driver partial power, driver full power, and both full power. Grab them as they are the same as the 911's and always worth $$$.

M220 - Limited Slip Differential: The holy grail. Grab the whole transaxle for mega profit. The transaxle in my 944 has this and is worth more than the whole car.

On the Fuch's, there are a lot of different sizes and backspaces, not to mention knock-offs. If they are the real-deal 85 944 ones I would be very interested in them...

Early 85 or late 85?

The Fuchs are definitely real. They're the 15"x7" fronts and 15"x8" rears. Are the sport seats even worth money if the leather is trashed? They're black leather, but I didn't check to see if they are manual or power. I'll check on the rest. Thanks for the list of codes!

Yes, the Sports Seats are still worth money. Most 911 guys want to recover them is some crazy ostrichasaurus leather so the factory covers don't matter.

Count me really interested in the wheels. And the suspension stuff, too, if it's an M030 car and a late-85 (aluminum arms).

My '86 951 had the M474 option, "adjustable" Konis front and rear. I say "adjustable" because the rears had to be removed to adjust and the fronts also had to be removed and the pistons fully compressed to adjust.

Well I went to look at it today, and the Fuchs are already sold, and someone trashed the seats. They totally removed/broke the backrest off of the right seat, and the center cloth was totally ripped out of the center of the driver's seat. It has the M410 sport seats, with cloth/leatherette. I wrote all the option codes down and it looks like the only cool options are M410 - (SPORT SEATS SEAT /BACKREST CLOTH/LEATHERETTE) and M018 - (SPORTS STEERING WHEEL WITH ELIVATED 30 MM HUB). Sorry for the caps, the descriptions were lifted from a website I found that had all the codes listed. Oh, and it had this code: M715 - CONTROL PV-U PRODUCTION PILOT RUN. What does that mean? Was it some kind of test vehicle?

Oh, and it was an early '85. I went and looked at it a month ago when they were trying to sell it whole, and for some reason remembered it being a late car.

Oh, and the sticker said the transmission code is 8Q, which when I looked it up said it has LSD. But it didn't have option M220. What's up with that?

In reply to 16vCorey:

a production pilot run is an early run of "sale-able" cars, basically a test-run of the assembly plant, making sure all their material-handling and assembly tooling are up to snuff before throwing the switch for full-on production. we aim for ZERO component design changes at this phase of a program, so that car probably doesn't have any real "prototype" parts on it.

sorry you missed the fuchs, but you should definitely check if both rear hubs turn the same direction. LSD = $

They pulled the trans and put it on the shelf before it hit the yard. Even though it's on the shelf, I can still probably get a good deal on it. It looks like the NA LSD trans can be had for $600-$1000, so unless I can get it super-cheap, it probably won't be worth picking up. It's the turbo LSD transmissions that are worth real money.

They still had the Fuchs in the office with a piece of paper that said "sold" on them. I'm pretty good friends with the guy who runs the place, so I just called him to see what the deal was. Turns out a regular customer said that he wanted them, but hasn't put any money down. If he doesn't come after them this weekend they're mine.

I buy and sell a lot of Fuchs wheels and the 944 wheels seem to be somewhat plentiful. In fact, I generally pass them up because they're harder to sell.

What's the going rate on a set?

For most 911 wheels, I get at least $800 per set, and singles have been selling very quickly for $225 each. It all depends on the size. Some go for much more. I've sold a few within 24 hours of buying them.

944 wheels sell for less. Look for a part number that starts with 951.

They're the early 944 wheels in 15x7 and 15x8, and from everything I've read they're the same wheels they used on the 911.

If they have a 911 part number and not polished or curbed, they're worth $800.

Sweet. I'll have to check the part numbers, but they're nice. The owner of the yard is going to call me on Monday if they guy they're on hold for doesn't come for them this weekend.

A lot of guys polish the anodized lip, which reduces the value. That's how people cover up curb damage.

The black centers can be brought back to life pretty nicely without resorting to repainting them.

Even some damaged wheels still have value. But, others...

The three 944 tranny's that are worth money are all from 951 and 944S2's. Either the 5R from the '86 951 (lsd + cooler), AOR from the Turbo S (lsd + cooler plus hardend 1st, 2nd gears and input shaft) or AOS from the S2, (lsd, short R&P)

The 1st tranny is probably worth around $1200, the last two are worth $1800.
