My wife and I combined don't pull down 6 figures and she's got a masters. As much as I would like to do one lap. It's not in the cards. I did pick up Joe's Champ earlier this year, and I promised it would make a challenge appearance. So it will be there, but that may be my last hurrah with the challenge. I live in the middle of LSX central it seems, but I work during the week while they're being tossed in the wrecking yard. By the time I get there on Sat mornings they're usually gone, or in pieces. Same with the local co-part, lots of opportunity, but no time to inspect during the week. Everything around here is 9-5 M-F which happens to be my work schedule.
My argument was more of, what's a wagon. Classic wagons, have full frames and stick axles. So does the XJ, one just got saddled with taller tires, and taller springs. So do many other "wagons" err suv's or whatever you call them. Anyway. Dinner is calling. I'm out

So, because I don't ask enough stupid questions...
Would a hearse count as a wagon?
When the Cherokee XJ first came out it was marketed as a sport wagon since the term SUV was not really used yet. For the challenge we even registered the XJ-R as an AMC sport wagon just to mess with people.
Guys don't make this complicated. Bring whatever you think a wagon is. Start your build threads and get busy!

Apologies for what happened in the truck class. We built the Miatruck into a truck last year for $2016 and just continued this year... it was added to the truck class by the organizers. I promise we will not attempt to create a MiataWagon next year.
I didn't expect an apology but I appreciate the thought. You certainly didn't break any rules, I never accused anyone of doing so, and you fully had the go-ahead from fellow competitors. Looking forward to seeing your efforts in the future.

Why not? Same chassis and shape. Basically its a wagon with a longer wheelbase and taller roof. Sort of like comparing a long wheel base conversion van with a raised roof to a 'standard' full size van.

After typing "wagon" into the interwebs, I just saw it for sale on the local bookFace group...I threw a serious offer of $1,000 so we'll see what happens!
The Roadmonster is a great Sub-class car. 1 year late for Aristocrats, arguable shoe-in for Soccer Moms, can tow more than half of this year's Truck field, and obviously is a Wagon. Severe weight penalty makes it uncompetitive though.

I assume this is why we hav sub-classes, so the "severe weight penalty" is applied to all in the class... leveling the field.

But the LT1 can make great power stock. More than most wagons!
EPIPHANY!
I traded my $2016 Challenge car, the Roadmonster wagon, for the 5-speed SC300 I am using as a donor car for the Rice Rod. The Roadmonster had a budget of $1,038 at the time of trade, with very little recoup. I then parted out the Lexus and maxed out recoup.
If I take the engine/trans out of the Rice Rod, I have a free 2JZ and 5-speed trans that I can put into any cheap Volvo 740 I happen to find (say the one I'm eyeing nearby for $500...because let's be real, the Rice Rod has a long way to go before that engine starts.

I do like the "Started life as a" rule. It would have been nice this year to see started life as trucks competing against each other. They might even come back the next year as improved versions.
At least one should be...
damn shame my wagons already over budget and not fast. Ill have to watch the wagon fun on the stream.

If there is a wagon class, I want someone to do this to a Focus wagon
4X4 Class, and the drivetrain must remain 4X4. This rules out the Audis, Subies, and Evos as those are AWD, not 4X4.
The other thing that could be fun.. A Van class
I've had several <$2000 Saturn wagons in the past that could've knocked down a low 15 second 1/4 and a respectable autox time even in DD trim. I think I could make a pretty good challenge effort with one. Sadly, I've had a CL alert setup for another for years, but haven't had any results :(
Escort with some sort of Mazda motor swap might be a good option.

There is a datsun 210 wagon for stupid cheap on facebook marketplace right now. If I could get permission I'd already own it.

There's 3 for $675 up to $1,600 (1996, 2001, 2002) listed on the Worcester MA craigslist.
They may already have had some chemical weight reduction performed courtesy of the NE winters.
Yeah, my search was only for 93-95. I'm not a fan of the 96+ wagons. Although anything 98 or earlier would be roughly the same speed in a challenge build.

So, I have two Volvo V70 XC AWD wagons (turbocharged 5-cylinder) .
One is perfect inside and out (even paint), but has a blown headgasket.
The other is super ugly but runs and drives.
Somebody please bring me $900 and get them out of my yard. Yes, I have titles.
