Wheel lock key?

I don't think I have ever gone out and bought wheel locks unless they came on a car I bought, so I have no idea what key is required. That being said, the E46 I picked up appears to have the original OEM wheels locks, but no key. I don't need it right this minute, but you know, probably one of those things you should have in the car in case of, say, a flat tire. Does anyone sell just the key for wheel locks? Is there a universal key (wouldn't that also defeat the purpose of locks?). All I can find is an entire set of locks and a key, and I have zero use for a brand new set of locking lugs.

1xHarbor freight deepwell 12pt socket. 1xBFH. 4xOEM lug bolt / nuts.

You can still get the key from the dealer. They really only use a few different patterns.

Stop by the local BMW dealer. The service dept often has a master set of keys and can remove the locks for you. Replace with standard lug nuts.

I've got them off using a pair of vice grips. Clamp the vice grips on the lug with a key, then hit it with a hammer, after its loose just spin it off. Tears up the outside of the lug but if you aren't reusing it who cares?

Good to know guys, thanks. Maybe I will see if my indy has one as well and I'll bring along a set of lugs. I don't think anyone is going to be stealing my Xi rims any time soon.

This is what I did for my wifes saab when it came time to put snows on and the key was gone.
