OK, learned something here. Never heard of JIS screwdrivers. I was about to go Googling to see if Mazda used the same posi-drive fasteners as are used on Brit cars.

I seem to recall in the dusty corners of my mind that the raison-d'etre for the Philips screw system was to LIMIT the amount of torque that could be applied to the screw by camming out of the slots. This they certainly do.

Think i should probably just go ahead and get my Amazon ordering on.

I am right there with you. It seems like every job I start "snowballs" as my FIL says as I screw up something or stuff refused to come apart.

Hang in there, besides how else would we get all of the good stories to tell later.

Well, this JIS thing is a revelation... Are JIS fasteners likely to be found on anything other than Japanese bikes and autos?

I'm there with my precious e30. I've never really had time for it, and I've run out of patience for crawling around under it in my driveway

It's a Japanese standard, you'll probably only find it on Japanese stuff. The JIS phillips tools seem to work better in non JIS screws than the other way around too.

Today i learned that Daystar has the wrong part listed for a trans mount for a 1998 Cherokee 4.0.

And that they don't give a berkeley.

Anyone care to ask me how i found out these two things?

A friend of mine cooked a rear axle bearing in his '88-ish jeep wrangler 4.0. We replaced the bearing only to have it go a week later. We decided instead of replacing another bearing we'd swap axles on Sunday with a wrecked '90-ish jeep wrangler 4.0 that he also had in his driveway.

Started around 6pm or so, old axle out of the '88, axle out of the '90, tried the old swap-a-roonie only to find out that they were different diameters and no amount of parts interchange was going to get that '90's axle in that '88. At 2am I said "darn dude, looks like it's not going to happen"

To which he replied "it HAS to happen, I have to be at work in 4 hours"

He got to work on time in the '88 with it's original axle. Absolutely nothing got accomplished (Except that he later traded both Jeeps for a BEAUTIFUL '82 Toyota Hilux 4x4)

Ding ding winner! And spending a half hour on the phone with Daystar.

Then realizing i can't get the right part here in time for our weekend trip. And this mount is berkeleyed hard.

Autozone hub has one. I don't want a stock one, and i don't want to do the job two more times.

I'll still pick it up tomorrow as a backup and just delay leaving on Friday as long as i can in case the right one shows up before noon.

This whole thread is why my interest in bikes (not the motorized kind, the leg-orized kind) has grown like crazy in the past little while. Pretty darn simple, easy to get to everything, cheap (well, sort of, unless you go nuts with it, but cheap compared to cars), simple, did I mention simple? Oh, and it's free to go places on them, other than sweat equity. Good luck, though, you reminded me that I should get the CR-V ready now, instead of the week before I leave for Canada in it...

See when I try to apply that sort of thinking, using the most simple and reliable thing I can, I get berkeleyed anyways one way or another. Actually the more I concentrate on it, the more likely I am to have a problem. Like my impressive killing of both a 5S-FE in a Camry and a Buick 3800 S2. And the dead reliable $600 Mitsubishi Mirage that replaced the Camry, and the dead reliable $400 Sunfire that replaced the Mirage. Now I drive a ZZ Prizm that burns no oil. The only predictable car I've had was the Italian one built by communists in a country that no longer exists. I also kill laptop power jacks and cords for some reason, and my Fluke 75 starting acting weird the other day.

At least I'm not the only one who has this happen to them.

True story, the dude that bought our old MSM (and gave me the old 95 turbo i had), just bought his own 2000 SE to defile. Already sourced a black interior and everything.

I have burned out on cars right now. Um only doing what has to be done.

Instead I'm doing home renovation. Thats a whole different level of aggravation and suffering.

I think I'm going to start watching tv again. It seems less stressful.

Yesterday i spent 7 hours removing the differential from my rust-free Miata.

The differential is still in the car.

1) broke 4 of 6 bolts holding the rear bracing on.
2) passenger rear lower control arm bolt to spindle won't come out. The upper came right out. Not the lower.
3) PPF bolts. Ugh. Where do i start? Took about 1000ftlbs to turn them, ultimately resulting in the top "nuts" coming off and leaving the bolts through the PPF, where they currently refuse to come out.

I've been burned-out with cars for awhile now. Actually, I still love cars, I just kinda don't like wrenching anymore. And I absolutely DESPISE anything electrical, which is where I'm stuck with both project cars. Haven't even gone out to the shop for 3 weeks.

So what do I do??? Well, I just picked up a used set of Avon slicks for the turbo Miata, which hasn't run in about 4 years, of course.

My thinking is that tripping over another stack of tires will motivate me to get the damn car running. This makes sense, right?

It seems if everytime I touch the E36 302, something goes amiss . . . Fix that issue and another one pops up . . . Rinse and Repeat
