GovDeals has 7 P71 squads for sale with the auction ending tomorrow. They currently are sitting at $425-$550 in Eastern Tennessee. They are not perfect, but all I'm looking for is a reliable, rust free, or easily, cheaply repaired beater for winter. So which one seems decent? Which one would you choose?
A 2004
B 2011
C 2003
D 2009
E 2003
F 2011
G 2009
I would go pre 2006 because the drive by wire on my 06 SUCKS.
04 was the last non-drive-by wire, has the largest throttle body, probably has the 4r70w (I think they had some 4r75w as well that year) and still has the 16" wheels. Those reasons, are why I prefer the 04.
Any reason to avoid the 03s?

03-04 would be the best bet. No drive by wire but has the better steering and another change I don't remember that wasn't available on the pre 02 models.
In reply to RevRico :
Total suspension rehab 03 and up.

At some point, they're going to have rack and pinion steering and a Watts Link rear end. I haven't had one since I gave my 95 p71 to my dad, so my knowledge is a bit sketchy as to the dates.
I was dreaming about having one today. Strip it and run it in CAM. I'm sure it wouldn't be competitive, but then nothing is if I'm driving.
That 2004 doesn't have cruise control. If it did, the buttons would be on the steering wheel. Is that important? It is to me.

looked like buttons on the wheel for the 2003s
Winter beater and cruise control never played well together, at least not for me. I rocked a 9C1 for 12 years without cruise, so I'm adaptable.
I've been "looking" at these now, too. A friend of mine recently bought one cheap and now I'm bit.

I have an '04 or '05 I picked up for $450 just to use the drivetrain and front suspension under my IH Travelette. I have to replace a couple coils for a random misfire, which is a fairly common issue.
Sometimes you can get a much better deal at the in person local small town auctions, and the cars tend to be better cared for. The hard core CV guys have favorites about which cars to get and which ones not to get by years, but I think they get a bit out of hand.
Probably not going to be looking at one that old, but the 2000 MY had a reputation for electrical problems.
