I'd go with the biggest and best German touring car I could, even if I had to spend a bit more change.
Mercedes. There's one on the list in your price range.
Second- BMW. There are several (5).
If you can stretch the budget to go little further, go bigger Benz. You only live once.
I wouldn't be thinking handling for the Autobahn. I'd be thinking power, top speed, and luxury.
VW's are great, but no where near the Autobahn experience I'd want.
Oh, and 100 mph in a Geo is whacked. Absolutely nothing fun about that.
I don't know... I think I would be tempted by the scirroco.. if nothing else, for the reason that VWoA refused to bring it over

Remember that gas is much, much more expensive in Europe. You may want to factor that into the question. Especially if you are driving at high speeds.
it's factored. I've lived in Europe, so I'm quite familiar with gas prices :(

In bad weather conditions, I find the German's are nuts. They hardly alter their pace from dry road conditions.
Sounds like Atlanta with better driving training..and more lane dicipline.
it is interesting that from this agency, for $20 extra you can book the car with "performance winter tires" rather than the all-season rubber. Since I'm going in march, I'll be watching the weather forecast closely.
