For reasons unknown I have been collecting dead car batteries. Sons old truck needs a battery. We checked them with our meter and found from 1 volt to high 10s. The best one is on the charger now. Was 11.7 after about an hour on the charger. Who offers the most for cores? How many volts should a good battery hold?

A healthy 12 volt battery should have approximately 12.6 to 12.8 volts fully charged. At 11.75 volts a 12 volt battery is considered dead. Alternator charging rate is approximately 13 to 14 volts.
This is relevant to me. I too have a bunch of batteries sitting around. (mostly from lawn tractors)
I dunno about the other chain FLAPS, but O'Reilly gives $5 (or are they up to $10 now?) gift cards, for each lead acid battery you bring in - even lawn tractor/motorcycle batteries.

Auto parts stores give a decent in store credit but actual recycling places pay by the lb and a car battery can be about $10. They are actually worth the most as a core on a new battery (ive seen core charge as much as $22 on a car battery) so make sure and keep one to turn in as 'the' core if you're planning to use this money to buy another battery.

Orielly was a $10 gift card last time I turned one in
Find a local battery refurbisher, my local one gives $15.
