Unsure to restore it for vintage racing exactly as as it was as a TR7 when ran in the day by a British Leyland dealer, or instead build it up as a TR8 with the V8 power and a new paint scheme. 99% sure we'll go the TR8 route, but what do you think?

In today's world, keeping it as-is/building it back up to original is always the best way to go. Too many of the old war horses are getting lost, you can always find another coupe body to build a prototype TR8 out of, you won't find too many more genuine TR7s (or TR8s) that have been driven in anger professionally.
Just seems like a shame to lose such a good example of what once was . . . ! !
I would trade it for one that is a TR8 so hopefully, someone would restore yours to the original race spec.

i told a brit co-worker that he had to work last Friday since his side lost.
I saw restore it too.. so few TR7s around anymore.. to find an old warhorse like that is just awesome

This car is an interesting build. It was built by a BL dealer in Canada who had connections with the special tuning department in the UK so it is more Euro spec than SCCA. The front nose is fibreglass, but that's how it was run in the day. A later owner did run it a couple of times with the V8. We also have a Dolomite 4 valve head so we could go that route also which would be legal because a handful of UK spec TR7's were produced that way. Love those webers, but in all the V8 would be by far the most fun, fastest and most reliable. We'll still keep the TR7 stuff.
Problem with running it as a TR8 is that you'll end up in a class competing against Camaros and the like. Might be some fun for you to watch all of those cool cars pass you up close and all, but you'll just be in the way most of the time and eventually one of those Camaros will just get pissed off enough to T-bone you ! !
Happened before up at Loudon, in New Hampshire, twice I believe . . .
which class would you enjoy racing it in? which class can you afford to race it in?
when building a car to race, you need to keep in mind the class, the class' personality and rules
"Problem with running it as a TR8 is that you'll end up in a class competing against Camaros and the like."
Why is that supposed to be a problem? Have you forgot that Ken Slagle won SCCA GT1 at the run-offs in Atlanta against all the Detroit iron back in the day? And that Bob Tullius got kicked out of the Trans Am series for being too fast so had to switch to IMSA.
We'll be running it in Canada (mostly Mosport)under VARAC rules in what is called the G70 class. A TR8 should be right in the mix with the vintage 911's, Detroit small blocks and Z cars. If we raced it as a TR7 we'd still have to race in the same class. They really should split G70 into under and over 2.5 litres, but that hasn't happened as of yet.
We had a TR8 racing up here that was an ex IMSA car that was one of the fastest cars on the grid. Unfortunately that car recently got sold to a new home in Germany. The new owner just recently won his class and 4th over all at a major vintage race in Spa in Belgium. Admittedly our car won't be modified as much as the IMSA car however, but a TR8 can hold its own.
Here's a recent photo of the ex IMSA TR8 at Spa.

Except that the Union Jack is also red, white and blue.

Hey. Don't be confusing things now - theirs is blue, white, and red. Not the same at all.
