SWMBO'S 2001 Sante Fe's steering growling. There is a slow leak on one off the lines, and the fluid got low. I topped it off, but she says it is still whining.

Could the pump have sucked air, and now it needs to be bled? Is the pump possibly shot. How do you troubleshoot a pump issue without throwing parts at it?

My WRX steering pump has been whining for 3 years now...replaced it, replaced the hoses, decided to just drown it out with turbo whine after nothing worked :/

Most PS systems bleed by just turning lock to lock like 20 times with the wheels up. Try that and see if it goes away.

Turn the radio up.  It will either bleed itself out eventually, or it will whine for the next decade.  If you can hook up a vacuum pump to the reservoir, you may be able to boil the last bit of air out of it.

Pumps can be whiney little bitches sometimes.

Low fluid. I figured as much. I gotta fix those lines.

A friend had an Accent with a whiny steering pump.  I exchanged the fluid twice, changed the belt, changed the pulley and changed the pump finally.  Never solved it.  She sold the car to her sister.  Still whining, but not my problem anymore (not reallly a problem, if you think about it, just an annoyance).
