You'll have a blast. Walk the course until you feel like you've got it down. Then walk it one more time. Hold back and pay attention to where some of the older gentleman are walking... Follow that line. It's usually the fastest through some of the more open bits. If you keep at it you'll be just as knowledgeable about the subject at others. If all else fails, find someone with similar drivetrain layout and ask them to ride along with you and give you pointers. Don't forget to have fun whether your winning or losing!
