$700 86 Dodge Aries

It's been years since I've seen one. (or noticed one anyway...) I've had to work on a few, and was never a fan. However when I saw this ad I felt somewhat compelled to cut it up and add some big ass box flares, which would then require a rwd swap of course.

You'd think I could find a 5.0l Mustang and make that happen for challenge money.

I think I'm spending too much time on this forum...

In reply to dropstep:

Agree. I had issues too and that was 5 years or more ago.

Way better off just getting the parts separately at junkyards.

Unfortunately, the next dead car I bring home has to be for the Mrs.

Fortunately, it's supposed to be a 68 Mustang, so I've got that going for me.

Unfortunately, I can't bring it home until my current project car is roadworthy.

Oh woe is me.

Junk yard local to me will not pay anything for 5.0 explorers because they have to many sitting out there along with a dozen motors and axles from crushed ones on the racks.

I would go looking for a rusted out 5.0 explorer and pull the motor and rear end. Then all you need is a front cradle. I would go look to the circle track guys for that and get a pinto front sub-frame and suspension and swap in the front hubs from a 2wd explorer or possibly a 90s mustang.

There's almost always one in the $800-1500 range on Houston CL. Some of them are even driving cars with titles.

There's a SN95 5.0l convertible with a bad T-5 for $1000obo on there right now.

RWD Dodge? Challenge Money? Turbo? I got you!

Turbo Aries is fun and 'easy'. I did it and wish i'd pushed it further. It had a challenging electrical issue that cramped my groove and since i'm me, i acquired probably 5 or more other interesting projects before i ever forced myself to fully fix it, and eventually i started stealing parts off it. I still have it sitting around here.

Overall i'd recommend it as a cheap thrills project. And i know pretty much everything about doing it if you need any help.

I have wanted a K- or P-car project for quite some time now, because I missed out on it when I was in high school due to having no money. They're thin on the ground though: the only cars that are still for sale are inexplicably 90s Acclaims.

No turbos, obviously.

edit: Of course, as soon as I post this an '88 Aries wagon shows up.

I usually have a serious aversion to this vintage of Chrysler product from my time in a general service shop in the early 90's, so I have no clue how this got to me like this. LOL

This is really just another bad idea on a boring rainy day stuck inside. I'm already overwhelmed with other projects that started like this.

ETA: To be clear, there isn't a chance in hell I'd pay $700 for this one. $400? Maybe. I'd be hooking up a trailer for a free one though. So who knows. I do stumble I to a few free cars now and then.

I'm not understanding the dilemma. You're on your way to pick it up right

They're extremely easy to work on. The reason more Acclaims are left is probably because they're built better than others. They were knocking on Accord and Toyota's initial quality ratings in the early 90s. Obviously they're not totally on par, but close enough to plausibly seem that way in their early lives. I have an 89 Spirit (same thing) with an interior that's holding up really well. Much better than my Aries (which has no original interior besides dash pad at this point).
