Am I a glutton for punishment.. a 230K mile e36 seems like a bad idea for a daily..
What say you guys. I want a 4-5 seater for family that is fun and cheap. I don't drive much (5-10 times a month to work).

miles ain't nothing but a number baby ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/cool-18.png)
Do it. If something breaks, parts are available and it shouldn't be too hard to work on.

Seems like it should be cheaper. How about a nice project e30 for under 2k?

or a 7 series for under 2k....those kiddos will have plenty of room!

The long distance would make for an interesting roadtrip as well.

For $2500-$2700 you can't go far wrong, especially if the cooling system has been gone through. I'd go look at it. Don't kid yourself that it's a 5-seater, though. It ain't no matter how many headrests and seatbelts are there.

Hmm. Wife says it must fit the kids in a pinch, so 3 across in seats is a must; but they don't have to like it. Maybe I should look at a 540 instead.
Plenty of cheap ones around with significantly less milage
I dd an E36 328i with 195k, its not a big deal. But you are NOT getting three car seats in the back of an E36, unless not being able to close the doors isn't an issue.

If I can't do the three car seats, I'll need to keep my RAV4 and maybe do something smaller and cheaper for a DD. like miata etc. Or do a downgrade Honda Accord and Miata/e36 combo.

Lolololol. bmw= gold plated titanium. And harder to work on than anything American or japanese, that's for sure.

That is most certainly not the case, unless one can't turn a wrench themselves.

Not my experience at all. Very logically put together, and parts really are no problem so long as you NEVER SET FOOT IN THE BMW DEALER. Buy from online sources and prices range from very cheap to reasonable. Plus I've never been to a pick n' pull that doesn't have at least one E36 on the lot.
On the other hand, living with things like airbag lights is just part of the cheap E36 experience.
I can't imagine a Rav4 would be any wider than an E36. Brand newish Rav? I'm used to looking at the older ones.

Agreed. I'll bet anyone $5 that there is a sphyalytic hooker in the trunk.
