Why does no one want my money

I've looked at five vehicles in the last two weeks and didn't/couldn't buy any.

78 C30 ~$1000 Who wouldn't want a 454 dually crew cab for a stack. Jim was a great guy and honest with me. Timing just wasn't right for either of us.

77 Vette $900 but no engine, trans, or interior. Discovered that the windshield vin didn't match the door vin and no idea what the frame vin was. Walked away feeling like it was a chop shop reject.

74 Vette $2000 apart but clean frame. But body vin didn't match the frame and I knew that'd bug me for as long as I owed it.

92 Miata $? I've seen this sit for several years. When I got in my wreak I thought of this as a donor. Same color and clean body other than windshield frame rusted out. Stopped by Saturday and she's having a garage sale. Perfect time to make an offer. Nope, she's in love with it and plans to fix it all up. I explain that she's looking at $2k for everything it needs. Still no go.

95 Jeep Wrangler $2000. Run into this at work a week ago. Go look at it tonight and offer him $1500 even though it doesn't run. He tells me that he'd rather spend $500 getting it running and then sell it for $2000? Really? I'm there with a tow vehicle and you won't have to do anything but sign the title. Give him my number to call when it's fixed.

Ever have a string where you just can't buy a vehicle no matter what you do?

I want your money. I'll even do unspeakable things in an alley for it. .

Like rebuild drum brakes. Or tune carbs. Or remove/apply undercoating. But not sell you a car. Can't do something that unspeakable.

Go look at it tonight and offer him $1500 even though it doesn't run. He tells me that he'd rather spend $500 getting it running and then sell it for $2000? Really?

Does he also have a car he'd rather scrap out for $200 than sell to you for $400 when it's advertised for $600?

I have a rendezvous that you can have cheap, then you can put a supercharged 3800 in it and beat up on the acura powered oddity at $2016. In a straight line anyway

older Vettes can have frame rot issues, so a good donor from another car isn't too scary.

Sorry but that is way to picky at that price point. VIN stuff I can see but everything else its a sub 1K car.

Oh don't get me wrong. My plan was drop the c30's 454 into a Vette for a fun Challenge car but I'd want it street legal and something to improve later and keep. I was fine with the price and everything until the vin issue.

Why didn't you mention that before? I'd probably would have done a fly and drive for that and the axles. Maybe come spring break if I can't get the axles on the Christmas snow trip.

Oh, I have lots of inexpensive stuff. I have a cheap 2001 A4 1.8T 5-speed, a nice 1986 Volvo 240, a nice J30 with low miles, a nice Honda Odyssey (not my challenge van), and a Chryssler 300M special that needs some love. All for challenge money or less...

Ah yes, the bandaid beige. Another of the classic Volvo colors that were such a challenge to sell. Maya Gold S60's, or as my Italian sales manager called it "Marone Gold" also comes to mind.

the Vette wouldn't scare me at all as long as the car itself was solid. the only VIN that matters is the one riveted to the dash- if it's still got the oem rivets, then it's the one that matches the car. end of story. doors get swapped all the time.. frames get swapped... but the firewall is (usually) a permanent part of the car.

Years ago, when you had to troll the print Want Ad instead of Craigslist, I needed a new daily driver.I looked at a ton of cars, but two of the vehicles I looked at stood out:

-1990 Maxima SE: needed a throwout bearing and clutch, and the owner wouldn't budge from $2000 (I offered $1700 cash). Guy said he wasn't in a rush to sell, and that price was worth it. And he didn't think the whirring throwout bearing and worn clutch was worth disclosing in the ad.

-1994 GMC S15 Jimmy: It was in perfect condition, looked brand new. Guy's mother owned it and it was meticulously maintained. I was going to buy it after test driving it, but the owner let his kids drive it and they got into an accident a day later when I went back to buy it, real smart!

Other than those two, I remember calling on a ton of other cars, including a ton of Trans Ams, a 1987 IROC 350, a full-size Blazer, a Jeep Cherokee, and more, and no one would call back.

I saw a 2 door Yukon on CL and called about a week ago. Good price but NJ number and it was a biz voice mail that I googled to NJ. No call back so I figure it a scam or he advertised all over CL. Then out of the blue I get a call from him. He's moving down here and shipping it down. Go figure. Told him to let me know when it gets here. What I don't understand is he's asking $1500 and I guess it'll take $800 to ship. Seems like he could just sell it up there and come out ahead.
