This big ol' booger made my afternoon of wrenching considerably less fun than it might've been. It's pretty hard stuff, and until I smartened up to take a pic, I couldn't see it to know that it was keeping me from getting a socket on the nut.

Never seen this before - is this some sort of epoxy, and something commonly done? And do I need to do it, too?

It's some formulation of a protective coating like De-Ox. Keeps electrical connections & battery connections from corroding. Usually it doesn't dry hard & brittle but depends what kind & how old it is.

Break it off with a screwdriver and carry on.

Looks like the goo from heat shrink tubing with sealant inside.  You can see some pushing out at the other end, too.

Good eye -- that's what it was. It was also a clue that the problem I thought I was solving -- an internally corroded battery cable, common on this car (Saab 9-5) and deemed failing by a shop a couple years ago, wasn't the problem. Some months later, the alt. failed while traveling, the tech fixed the cable when replacing the alt. (hence the goo), but it wasn't on the invoice. So now I have a spare cable...
